Production

Conception and development

The series has been announced to be greenlit to full series on April 12, 2023,[1] which culminates a decade of conversation as George R.R. Martin confirmed back in 2013 that he had been in discussion with HBO over a possible adaptation of the Tales of Dunk and Egg short stories.[2] The adaptation of the Dunk and Egg stories, helmed by Steve Conrad, was first reported to the public on 30 November 2021, however.[3] On 9 March 2022, George R. R. Martin confirmed these rumors and revealed that the first season would be an adaptation of the first novella, The Hedge Knight. He further explained that the series would not be called Dunk & Egg, as it could be mistaken for a sitcom by viewers unfamiliar with the stories. Instead, the most likely title is either A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms or The Hedge Knight.[4][5]

The production of the series has stopped due to the WGA's strike and will resume once an agreement has been found.[6] Filming is scheduled to start in the Summer 2024.[7]

The production's codename is "Sweetfoot", a reference to Ser Duncan's palfrey.[8]
