Florence Fossoway was a noblewoman of House Fossoway during the reign of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen. She was married to Martyn Tyrell.[1]
Character
Lady Florence was able and intelligent. Clever with handling money and accounts, Septon Barth claimed that Florence had been "counting apples since she learned to walk".[1]
History
Florence married young Martyn Tyrell, a younger son of Lord Bertrand Tyrell.[2] After her marriage, Florence took charge of the accounts of Highgarden and increased the incomes of House Tyrell by over a third.[1]
When a new master of coin was needed by King Jaehaerys I Targaryen, his Hand of the King, Septon Barth, put forward Martyn's name. In truth, he intended that Florence would perform the duties of the office, as she would be brought to court with her husband. The king also hoped that Lady Florence's presence at court would be welcomed by Queen Alysanne Targaryen, who had not been attending council sessions since the death of her daughter. Although her husband officially sat on the small council and was given the title master of coin, Florence was effectively in charge of the treasury.[1]
Under Lady Florence and her lord husband, the realm saw prosperity, and the couple was nearly as effective as the late Rego Draz.[1]
