History
Antiquity
The Masseys are a house of First Men origin. Lord Maldon Massey, a vassal of the Storm King Durran the Ravenfriend, built Stonedance and ruled Massey's Hook. The Masseys broke away from House Durrandon during the reign of King Durwald the Fat, however.[5] The Masseys were one of the many houses which historically claimed the mouth of the Blackwater Rush.[6]
The Masseys returned to the dominion of Storm's End when the Storm King Qarlton II took Stonedance after besieging the castle for a year and slaying King Josua Massey. Less than two years later, however, Josua's daughter married the Andal warlord Togarion Bar Emmon, who expelled Qarlton's men from Stonedance and replaced them with Josua's son. The Andals eventually made peace and intermarried with the Durrandons.[7]
Targaryen Era
Prior to Aegon's Conquest, House Massey was sworn to House Durrandon of Storm's End but had closer ties to House Targaryen of nearby Dragonstone. When Aegon the Conqueror launched his invasion of Westeros, the Masseys supported him instead of the Storm King, Argilac the Arrogant. The master of laws for King Aegon I was Triston Massey. With the creation of the crownlands after the Conquest, the Masseys became sworn to the Targaryens of Aegon's new capital, King's Landing, instead of House Baratheon of Storm's End, who had replaced the Durrandons.[4]
Lord Lucifer Massey stood for King Maegor I Targaryen in his trial of seven, and was killed by the Warrior's Son Ser Harys Horpe.[8]
During the Dance of the Dragons, Lord Gormon Massey was killed attempting to tame the dragon Vermithor on Dragonstone during the Sowing of the Seeds.[9] Elinda Massey was a lady-in-waiting for Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, and reportedly gouged out her own eyes at the sight of her queen being devoured by the dragon Sunfyre.[10]
After the deaths of many Kingsguard during the Winter Fever, young King Aegon III Targaryen appointed Ser Robin Massey to the Kingsguard and made him Lord Commander. However, Robin was dismissed soon afterwards by Lord Unwin Peake, one of the regents of the king, as the council of regents had not been consulted. Later, Robin was killed in a quarrel by the captain of Unwin Peake's personal guards, Tessario. Unwin Peake was also the cause of rumors spread to defame Elinor Massey, a possible marriage candidate for the king.[11]
When Lord Bloodraven marched on Whitewalls to quash the Second Blackfyre Rebellion, among the houses who came in support was House Massey.[12]
