Ormund Baratheon was the Lord of Storm's End and the head of House Baratheon during the reign of kings Aegon V and Jaehaerys II Targaryen. He served as Hand of the King for Jaehaerys.
History
Ormund was the heir of Lyonel Baratheon, Lord of Storm's End. Duncan Targaryen, Prince of Dragonstone, was betrothed to Lyonel's daughter, but in 239 AC, he spurned her to elope with a smallfolk woman named Jenny of Oldstones. Though Duncan's father, King Aegon V Targaryen, did all he could to have the marriage undone, Duncan stubbornly refused to give up Jenny, and instead abdicated his claim to the throne in favor of his younger brother. Still, this did not restore the peace — Lyonel, infuriated at the insult to his daughter and himself, rebelled against the Iron Throne and crowned himself as a new Storm King. The short and bloody rebellion was eventually settled when the king's champion defeated Lyonel in single combat, and King Aegon V promised that his youngest daughter, Princess Rhaelle Targaryen, would marry Lord Lyonel's heir, Ormund.[4][3]
To confirm the promise, Princess Rhaelle was sent to live at Storm's End as Lyonel's cupbearer and companion to his lady wife.[4] In 245 AC, Rhaelle and Ormund were married, and their son, and only known child, Steffon, was born a year later.[3]
Ormund had inherited Storm's End already prior to his marriage.[3] He became Hand of the King to his brother-in-law, King Jaehaerys II Targaryen, following the tragedy at Summerhall. When Jaehaerys decided to intervene militarily in the Stepstones to defeat the Band of Nine, Ormund was made commander of the expedition. He was one of the first to be killed, struck down by Maelys I Blackfyre, and died in the arms of his son and heir, Steffon. Command of the expedition passed to Ser Gerold Hightower, the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, and Ormund was succeeded as Hand by Edgar Sloane.[2]
Family
In 239 AC, though Lord Lyonel Baratheon had a daughter, Ormund was his heir.[4] This implies that Ormund was a direct descendant of Lyonel, either a son or a grandson.
The old castellan of Storm's End in 278 AC, Ser Harbert, was the great-uncle of Robert, Stannis and Renly Baratheon.[5] Ser Harbert's family name is not stated in the books; he may have been an Estermont or a Baratheon. If the latter, then Harbert would be Ormund's younger brother.
