The Quill and Tankard is an inn in Oldtown.

Layout

The Quill and Tankard is located on an island in the Honeywine. It is a tall, timbered building that leans toward the south and has a common room and a torchlit terrace. There is an apple tree by the river. The island connects to the rest of the city with an old plank bridge.[1]

The inn is renowned for its fearsomely strong cider. Novices from the Citadel go there to drink. Some serving wenches also entertain men. Emma is the oldest of the inn's wenches, who also include her daughter, Rosey.[1]

History

In six hundred years, the Quill and Tankard has never closed.[1]

When Maester Aemon was a young novice he used to go to the Quill and Tankard.[2] When his younger brother, Prince Aegon Targaryen, and Ser Duncan the Tall, the knight Aegon squired for, came to visit Aemon, they also went to the inn.[3]

Quotes

Though the tall, timbered building leaned toward the south the way novices sometimes leaned after a tankard, Pate expected that the inn would go on standing for another six hundred years, selling wine and ale and fearsomely strong cider to rivermen and seamen, smiths and singers, priests and princes, and the novices and acolytes of the Citadel.[1]

I dreamt of Oldtown, Sam. I was young again and my brother Egg was with me, with that big knight he served. We were drinking in the old inn where they make the fearsomely strong cider.[3]
