Season 2 of Game of Thrones is the second season of the series. It began filming on 25 July 2011, with production expected to last until December 2011 or January 2012. The series is due for transmission in Spring 2012. The series will consist of ten episodes.
Season 2 is closely based on A Clash of Kings, the second novel in the Song of Ice and Fire novel series by George R.R. Martin. Some characters and elements from the first novel, A Game of Thrones, have been held back for the second season and some other elements were brought forward into the first for production reasons. In addition, some storylines and events that happened off-page in the book will be depicted on-screen for the series, and some elements from the third novel, A Storm of Swords, will be brought forward into the second season, in particular to give the character of Jaime Lannister more screen-time.

Plot
Season 2 spans several months on a world where the seasons last for years at a time. The Seven Kingdoms are at war, with the King in the North, Robb Stark, fighting to win independence for his people. Robb decides that he must win the allegiance of the fiercely independent ironborn to his cause, and sends his best friend Theon Greyjoy to treat with his father. Meanwhile, Joffrey Baratheon holds the Iron Throne with the backing of the powerful House Lannister, but his uncle Renly has also claimed the throne with the support of House Tyrell, whose armies are much larger. As they struggle for the throne, Tyrion Lannister arrives in King's Landing to take matters in hand.
However, there is another faction entering the picture. Stannis Baratheon, Robert's younger brother and Renly's older, has also claimed the Iron Throne. A proven battle commander and veteran of several wars, Stannis is known to be utterly without mercy to his enemies and will do what is right even if it destroys him. Advising him is Melisandre, an enigmatic priestess from the east, who believes Stannis is meant for a greater destiny, and Ser Davos Seaworth, an honest and honorable man uneasy with the shift in power at Stannis' court.
Far to the east, Daenerys Targaryen has hatched the only three dragons in the world. Eventually they will grow into terrifying monsters capable of destroying cities at her command, but for now they are still hatchlings and vulnerable. With her khalasar gone, Daenerys and her small band of followers must find a way across a forbidding wasteland and find new allies to support her claim to the Iron Throne.[1]

Production
HBO ordered a second season of Game of Thrones on 19 April 2011, two days after the series premiere.[12] The second season obtained a 15% increase in budget in order to be able to stage the war's most important battle,[13] the Battle of the Blackwater, in episode nine.
Filming took place during 106 shooting days. During three-quarters of those, two crews ("Dragon" and "Wolf") were working simultaneously in different locations.[14] Filming took place in Northern Ireland, include The Linen Mill Film & Television Studios, Banbridge, Ballintoy Harbour in County Antrim, Gosford Castle, outside Markethill in County Armagh and also at Downhill Strand in County Londonderry and at the Paint Hall studio facility in Belfast. Additional filming, particularly of the Night's Watch storyline will take place in Iceland, on the Vatnajökull glacier, in November 2011. Malta will not be used for filming in Season 2, with the city of Dubrovnik in Croatia standing in for King's Landing and Qarth.[15][16]
Casting
Casting for Season 2 began in May 2011.[17]
Returning characters
With the exception of Conan Stevens, whose role of Gregor Clegane was recast with Ian Whyte, all Season 1 actors whose characters are still alive returned for Season 2.[18]
The principal cast is now headlined by Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) instead of Sean Bean.[19] Dinklage, who in the first season was featured at the end of the cast list, signed on to the series for six seasons.[20]
New characters
Given the very large cast of characters in Martin's novels, the producers had to fill a great number of additional speaking roles – Martin has estimated the second season's cast as the largest on television.[21] The new actors include, in order of their appearance:
- Episode 1
- Tony Way as Ser Dontos Hollard, a drunkard knight.
- Ben Crompton as "Dolorous Edd" Tollett, a man of the Night's Watch.[22]
- Robert Pugh as the Wildling chief Craster.[23]
- Carice van Houten as Melisandre of Asshai, the "Red Priestess" of the foreign god R'hllor and an influential advisor to King Stannis Baratheon. Van Houten was previously asked (but unable) to audition for the role of Cersei in season one. While her character retains her signature red robes and hair, unlike in the novels Melisandre is not portrayed as having red eyes, making her appear somewhat more human.[24]
- Oliver Ford Davies as Stannis's maester Cressen.[25]
- Liam Cunningham as Ser Davos Seaworth, the "Onion Knight", a bannerman of Stannis and former smuggler.[26] Cunningham had already been in talks for a role in season 1. As he is left-handed, his Davos has the fingers of the right hand shortened, unlike in the novels where the left hand is crippled. In an interview, Cunningham said that a lot of new dialogue had to be written for his character, because in the novels Davos, a point-of-view character, is portrayed more through his thoughts than through his actions.[27]
- Stephen Dillane as Stannis Baratheon, the elder of Robert's two younger brothers and one of several claimants to the Iron Throne.[28]
- Kerr Logan as Davos Seaworth's pious son Matthos.[29]
- Karl Davies as Ser Alton Lannister, a character created for the series[30] who replaces Cleos Frey as envoy from the Starks to the Lannisters.
- Episode 2
- Tom Wlaschiha as Jaqen H'ghar, a caged prisoner and recruit of Yoren.[31] Wlaschiha's pronunciation of his character's name, Jack-in, was adopted for use in the show.[32]
- Hannah Murray as Craster's daughter Gilly.[33]
- Gemma Whelan as Yara Greyjoy, an Ironborn captain and sister of Theon. Named "Asha" in the novels, the character's name was changed to avoid confusion with the Wildling Osha, Bran Stark's companion.[34]
- Patrick Malahide as Balon Greyjoy, lord of the Iron Islands and father of Theon.[35]
- Daniel Portman as Podrick Payne, the squire to Tyrion Lannister.[36] The 19-year-old Portman plays Podrick as about 16 years old, instead of about 12 as in the novels. To be able to portray Podrick as awkward, shy and weak, Portman, previously a sportsman, stopped his fitness regimen and gained some weight to appear more endearing.[37]
- Lucian Msamati as Salladhor Saan, a Lysene pirate and friend of Davos Seaworth.
- Andy Beckwith as Rorge and Gerard Jordan as Biter, the two other caged captives.
- Episode 3
- Natalie Dormer as Lady Margaery Tyrell, a noblewoman from the Reach promised to be the wife of Renly Baratheon.[38]
- Gwendoline Christie as Brienne of Tarth, a female warrior who joins Renly Baratheon's guard and becomes a follower of Catelyn Stark.[39] To prepare for the role, Christie took up an intense training regimen, adding over a stone (6.4 kg) of muscle mass.[40] So that she could be mistaken for a man, her armor was decorated with lines that slant away from her hips.[41]
- Fintan McKeown as Ser Amory Lorch, a Lannister bannerman.[42]
- Andy Kellegher as Polliver, a Lannister armsman.
- Episode 4
- Oona Chaplin as Talisa, a healer from Volantis. She is Robb Stark's romantic interest, a role played in the novels by the noblewoman Jeyne Westerling.[43]
- Michael McElhatton as the Stark bannerman Lord Roose Bolton.[44]
- Nonso Anozie as Xaro Xhoan Daxos, a merchant prince of Qarth.[45]
- Ian Hanmore as Pyat Pree, a Qartheen warlock.[46]
- Episode 5
- Laura Pradelska as Quaithe, a masked woman in Qarth.
- Simon Armstrong as Qhorin Halfhand, a ranger of the Night's Watch.
- Roy Dotrice as Pyromancer Hallyne, an elderly alchemist at King's Landing.[47]Dotrice, a friend of George R.R. Martin, is the reader of the A Song of Ice and Fire audiobooks and was initially cast as Grand Maester Pycelle for the first season, but had to withdraw for health reasons.
- Episode 6
- Rose Leslie as Ygritte, Jon Snow's love interest among the Wildlings.[48]
- Episode 8
- Edward Dogliani as the "Lord of Bones", a Wildling leader.
- Episode 10
- Wren Ros Elliot-Sloan as Rhaego, as seen in Daenerys's visions in the House of the Undying.
Uncast characters
Several characters from A Clash of Kings are not known to have been cast for season two. These include:
- Ser Jacelyn Bywater; Bronn takes his place as new city watch commander in the adaptation,
- a pair of Crannogmen siblings, Meera and Jojen Reed,
- two young Freys fostered at Winterfell, known as Big Walder Frey and Little Walder Frey,
- Roose Bolton's bastard son, Ramsay Snow,
- one of Theon's three uncles, Aeron "Damphair" Greyjoy,
- Davos Seaworth's other sons (Dale, Allard, Maric and Devan),
- the daughter of Stannis and his wife Selyse Florent, Shireen and their fool Patchface,
- the mercenary leader Vargo Hoat and his sellsword company, the "Brave Companions."
Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have said that they would delay the introductions of several key characters first appearing in A Clash of Kings until the third season. They did so because of the large number of characters already introduced in season two, and because they couldn't afford to have people "waiting around" for their characters to become central to the plot.[49]
