History
Ser Jaime Lannister squired for Sumner for four years;[1] Merrett Frey was also sent to Crakehall as a page and made a squire by Lord Crakehall.[4]
During the campaign against the outlaws of the Kingswood Brotherhood, Sumner had to ransom Merrett back after he was captured by Wenda the White Fawn. After receiving a hard blow to the head from a mace in the next battle, Merrett was no longer able to fight. Unwilling to grant knighthood to Merrett, Sumner kindly sent Merrett back to the Twins.[4] Jaime stopped Big Belly Ben from killing the Lord of Crakehall in battle.[2]
Sumner's fate is unknown. Lord Roland Crakehall led the house during the Sack of King's Landing.[1]
Quotes
'Keep friends at your back and foes where you can see them,' Sumner Crakehall had once counseled him. Or had that been Father?[5]

Family
Sumner is described on several occasions as being an old man by Jaime Lannister when he squired for him in the late 270s AC.[2][4][6] The current Lord of Crakehall, Lord Roland Crakehall, was likely his son and succeeded him after his death around the time of Robert's Rebellion.
