Permission type

@User:Scafloc, forum. iirc, other than in the PD license, attribution is an essential part of the license and you have to write it, I left it to free text because everyone use diffident format for references and Arthur information and IMO this is the easiest and fastest way todo it, here are a few examples:

  • Before: Coat of arms of House Lyberr.Created by Crackclaw with the help of Inkwellideas Coat of Arms Visual Designer (Pro version). I the copyright holder of this work, hereby publish it under the following licenses: Permission is granted to copy, distribute and/or modify this document under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 or any later version published by the Free Software Foundation; with no Invariant Sections, no Front-Cover Texts, and no Back-Cover Texts. A copy of the license is included in the section entitled "GNU Free Documentation License"[1].
  • Now: {{Copyright tags|type=gfdl |text=Coat of arms of House Lyberr.Created by Crackclaw with the help of Inkwellideas Coat of Arms Visual Designer (Pro version).}}

  • Before: Created by Scafloc, snakes from wiki commons.
  • Now: {{Copyright tags|type=gfdl|text=Created by Scafloc, snakes from wiki commons}}

  • Before: This image is of book cover(s), and the copyright for it is most likely owned either by the artist who created the cover(s) or the publisher of the book(s). It is believed that the use of low-resolution images of book covers to illustrate an article discussing the book in question on the English-language Wikipedia, hosted on servers in the United States by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, qualifies as fair use under United States copyright law. Other use of this image, on Wikipedia or elsewhere, might be copyright infringement. See Wikipedia:Non-free content for more information.
  • Now: {{Copyright tags|type=cover}}

the problems with the "Permission type"(beside not being a real permission), that it's all in free text, if you wish I can add optional variable, but wouldnt it just be easier to write it in free text?

  • instead of this - | owner=XXX || permission=YYY || website_owner=link
  • this - owner: XXX, Permission:YYY, website link.

You are right that this is possible in free text; basically everything is possible in a free text format. I could argue that even the copyright type is possible in the free text format. What I like about the old template for the conditional-use is that there is specific parameter and label for the owner and his/her website.
"It is used with permission of the creator & copyright holder: {{{owner}}}"
and "The original picture can be found on: {{{website_owner}}}".
Thus the owner is specifically credited. If one would forget this you would immediately notice it where as with a free text format has less structure and thus people may not notice that the owner and his / her website is missing. And like I said everyone whom I approached for pictured wanted to be credited and their website to be named. And I promised them that. That is why I included these as separate fields.
Again I like the idea of having 1 template instead of multiple and it is not my intention to pile work on you so to say but this for me an important point. Scafloc 18:31, 19 August 2011 (CDT)

Dont worry about piling work, I am more concerned about lack of input and templates that doesnt work for everyone ;)
The reason I made it with only 2 generic parameters, was to make it as simple as possible (this whole copyright is kind of annoying when you have to upload multiple files) but if you need those additional parameters, we can make it work.

what exactly do you want to be, something like this for permission?

Copyright holder: '''{{{owner}}}''' <br />
<p>The text of the permission was:'''{{{permission}}}''' </p>
The original picture can be found on: {{{website_owner}}}

what about other types? and does it have to be {{{website_owner}}} what about {{{website}}} or just a {{{link}}}?

And btw you cant really put other copyright types in free text, unlike the vague "permission" that can always comeback to bite us in the ass, they are real licences with few pages of "legal mambo" behind them ;) Mor 02:56, 20 August 2011 (CDT)

The example above is good. Whether it is {{{website}}} or {{{website_owner}}} does not matter to me either of them will work. {{{link}}} is too vague to my taste.
About the legal thing; I promised that we would explicitly state that the copyright stays with creator/copyright holder and that others cannot use the picture without their permission. So in legal terms that would probably a license with the terms being the permission to show the pictures (no commercial purpose), no fees charged, explicit crediting and link to website. And the period extends until it is withdrawn (or copyright ends). I looked on the internet but could not find a "general" description but we could specify this in a license. I approached all the artists, low-profile no "please sign here" because I think that would scare them off. So I would not want to bother them with this. Cheers,Scafloc 04:56, 20 August 2011 (CDT)
I added the text to the permission type and added documentation for it. Right now the license text I use is : This work is copyrighted, the copyright holder has granted permission for this image to be used in Wiki of Song of Ice and Fire. This permission does not extend to third parties. I think it fits nicely, considering that wikipidea is free for none commercial use and we supply specific permission information. tell me if you think that it needs something more or just edit in the changes yourself.
Sorry, It took me so long I missed your comment in the recent changes flood. Mor 06:30, 22 August 2011 (CDT)
