Synopsis

[Sansa Stark|Sansa] is eating breakfast near an inn by the Trident with Septa Mordane. The Speta tells Sansa that her father had left early with the King. Sansa is feeding her direwolf Lady under the table. The Septa tells her that she is a good girl, but it is not appropriate to feed the wolf under the table; with respect to Lady, Sansa is as willful as Arya. The Septa informs her that they have been invited to ride in the wheelhouse with Queen Cersei and Princess Myrcella in the wheelhouse. Sansa has been greatly looking forward to this for a week, maybe a chance to be with Prince Joffrey. Joffery is everything she wanted her prince to be like: tall and blonde and tall. The one thing that Sansa was afraid of was Arya, who seemed to ruin everything for her. The Septa wants Sansa and Arya to dress well for the event. Sansa has already decided on a fine silk dress, she does not expect Arya to wear anything appropriate. Sansa begs to be excused so she can look for Arya.

She finds Arya on the banks of the Trident trying to comb the mud out of her direwolf Nymeria fur. Arya is not interested in riding in the wheelhouse that does not even have a window, and she intends to go with Mycah to look for rubies in the river. Sansa thinks there is nothing to look at, but Arya has been fascinated with all the new flowers and other things she has found in this land. After telling Sansa about all the great things she has seen, Sansa tells Arya that their father told them they were not supposed to leave the column. Arya replies that she did not go far and Nymeria was with her. Also, she sometimes road with the column and talked to people; Sansa knows the sort of rough people (squires and grooms and naked children) Arya would talk with—the butcher’s boy (Mycah) who was the worse, his sight making her sick. Then Sansa tells Arya that she has to come, Septa Mordane would be expecting her. Then Sansa asks why one would want to ride a stinky horse when you could ride in the wheelhouse on pillows eating lemon cakes, and keeping company with the queen. Arya tells her she does not even like the queen and still intends to go riding. Sansa, giving up, leaves, and Arya yells after her that they would not let her bring Lady; for this Sansa has no retort.

Sansa doesn't understand how her sister can be so different, more like Jon Snow than Sansa herself. She had even asked her mother if there had not been some mistake, and the grumkins had taken their real sister. Since she could think of no reason her mother would lie, she figured it must be true.

When she nears the camp, she sees a crowd gathered around the wheelhouse; the council had sent an honor guard from King's Landing to accompany them the rest of the way. It included with two more members of the Kingsguard in extremely fine armor: Barristan Selmy an old, strong, graceful man in white armor and a most beautiful man in green armor. There was also a gaunt grim man that Sansa found very disturbing and terrifying. This causes her to step back right into Sandor Clegane, who terrified her but now she finds he is not half so terrifying. She kneels and hugs Lady. This brings attention to Lady, and people begin to comment at the presence of the direwolf. Some of the people recognize Lady as a direwolf. Next thing she knows the two new Kingsguard, standing above her with drawn swords. Sansa is frightened. She hears the queen tell Joffery to go to her, and he seems to come to her rescue, telling the men to put away the swords and demanding Sandor to leave since he is scaring his betrothed. Sansa tells Joffery it was not Sandor that scared her but the other stranger. She is told it is Ilyn Payne, the King's Justice. Barristan Selmy tells her that Ilyn sometimes scares him and then the queen states that the wicked need to fear the King’s Justice. Sansa finds her voice and tells everyone that they have obviously chosen the right man. Then Barristan introduces himself to Sansa, but the other knight insists that she guess. She correctly deduces that he is the king's brother, Renly Baratheon. She was feeling comfortable until Ilyn Payne comes to stand before her. She apologizes to the man for offending him—the man but does not speak and turns and walks away. Joffrey explains that his tongue was ripped out by Aerys II Targaryen. Cersei follows with telling Sansa that he speaks eloquently with his sword has unquestioned devotion to the domain.

The Queen says that she must speak with the councilors, and must postpone the day with Myrcella. Instead, she asks Joffrey to entertain their guests—Sansa is overjoyed with the idea of a whole day with Joffery. Sansa offers to do whatever the prince wants to do, and Joffrey states they could go riding. Sansa states she would love to go riding. Joffrey tells her that it would best to leave Lady and his dog behind. Sansa does not initially understand about the dog Joffery is talking about, but quickly realizes it is Sandor he is talking about, and asks if it is safe to go without Sandor. Joffrey responds that he has his sword, Lion's Tooth. They ride along the river, exploring the area. They find holdfast and Joffrey asks that they feed their prince. After they finish eating, they continue more slowly. Joffery tells Sansa that they are coming up to the battlefield where Joffrey’s father had killed Rhaegar Targaryen when they hear an odd sound, like wooden clattering, coming from nearby. They go to investigate.

In a nearby clearing, they find a boy and a girl, a scrawy thing in soiled leathers, play fighting with sticks. The boy is much taller than the girl, and is beating her. When the girl is smacked on her hand, it disarms her. It when Arya starts sucking her hand that that Sansa recognizes Arya, and is horrified. Joffrey laughs, and the boy, Mycah, drops his stick. Joffrey asks the boy’s name, which Mycah answers. Sansa adds that he is the butcher’s boy, and Arya tells Joffrey he is her friend and to leave him alone. Joffrey calls him that he is butcher’s boy who wants to be a knight. Joffrey then challenges him to a fight, sword against stick; Mycah tells Joffrey that Arya asked him to fight her (Sansa could tell by looking at Arya that the boy is telling the truth) and doesn't take up the challenge. Joffrey pricks the boy’s face with his sword, angry that Mycah was hitting his betrothed's sister. Arya picks up her stick and tells Joffrey to leave him alone. Joffrey tells Arya he will not hurt Mycah much.

Arya cracks Joffrey on the back of the head, breaking her stick. Mycah runs away, while an enraged Joffrey staggered and catches a second blow from Arya with his sword, knocking the stick from her hand. Meanwhile Sansa’s screams to stop. Arya throws a rock, hitting Joffrey's horse and driving it away. Joffrey chases Arya with his sword, backing her up against a tree, until suddenly Nymeria appears, biting Joffrey's sword arm and they are rolling the gress. Joffrey drops his sword. Arya calls Nymeria’s name, and the direwolf lets the prince go. The prince now is winpering on the ground with a bloody arm. He tells Arya not to hurt him; that he will tell his mother. Arya picks up Lion's Tooth and throws it into the Trident. Arya runs off to her hours with Nymeria at her heals. When Sansa goes to tenderly help Joffrey, but he snarls at her to leave and not touch him.
