Synopsis

In the previous Catelyn chapter a man came to Bran's room to kill him. He had not expected Catelyn to be there and attacked him. The would-be assassin wounded Catelyn's hands but was killed by Bran's direwolf before he could kill Catelyn. Catelyn then decided to travel King's Landing to inform her husband and start inquiries about the owner of the expensive knife the assassin had with him.

Catelyn and Ser Rodrik Cassel arrive in King's Landing by galley. Catelyn pays the oarsman of the Storm Dancer for their work. The journey was hard for Ser Rodrik as he had been very seasick. He had befouled his whisker so often that they had to cut them off.

Catelyn and Rodrik discuss how they can begin their inquiries. Catelyn is known in King's Landing, for example by Petyr Baelish. Catelyn remembers that Petyr was raised with her in Riverrun. They were close until Catelyn was about to marry Brandon Stark and Petyr challenged Brandon for her hand. Brandon defeated Petyr easily but spared his life as Catelyn requested. After his recovery Hoster Tully sent him away. Catelyn has not seen him since.

Ser Aron Santagar is the master-of-arms of the Red Keep and may recognize the weapon. Ser Rodrik propose that he will go to see him because without his whiskers he is unrecognizable. Catelyn will stay in a modest inn until he returns. After Ser Rodrik leaves Catelyn tries to get some sleep but she is woken up by men of the City Watch of King's Landing. The soldiers bring her to Petyr Baelish. Petyr explains that Lord Varys told him that she had arrived. He claims that Varys knows everything that goes on. They are joined by Varys who stressed Petyr's remark by inquiring about Bran's health and asking Catelyn to show him the dagger.

Catelyn shows the dagger but it is Petyr who reacts. The dagger belonged to him he claimed, until he lost it. He had backed Jaime Lannister in a tourney. Jaime was defeated by Loras Tyrell and so Petyr's dagger was won by Tyrion Lannister.
