Catelyn and Ser Rodrik Cassel arrive in Kings Landing on a ship. After Ser Rodrik goes to get information, Catelyn is surprised by guard who have come to escort her to Petyr Baelish and Lord Varys. Petyr tells her that the knife had been won from him by Tyrion Lannister.

Synopsis

The captain informs Catelyn that the 60 ore galley Storm Dancer is an hour out of King’s Landing. Catelyn and Ser Rodrik Cassel had taken gallery from White Harbor instead of a fishing sloop as suggested by Ser Rodrik because she had wanted the speed, and it was just as well since the wind had been against them. Ser Rodrik arrives on deck looking much better than he had in days, but thinner and without his side whiskers. He had been seasick during the voyage, and the side whiskers were cut because he was fouling himself. Catelyn pays the oarsman of the Storm Dancer for their work. The journey was hard for Ser Rodrik as he had been very seasick; he fouled his whiskers so often that they had to cut them off.

Much later after the captain had left them, Catelyn and Rodrik discuss how they can begin their inquiries about the dagger. Catelyn states that once they get to King’s Landing they must find the King’s Master of Arms and pray he can be trusted. Rodrik points Ser Aron Santagar may recognize the weapon, but Catelyn has to be careful; there are people in the city that will recognize Catelyn. Catelyn remembers that Lord Baelish (still known by the name given to him by her brother), a member of the Small Council and the Master of Coin, was raised with her in Riverrun; he was her father’s ward. They were close until Catelyn was about to marry Brandon Stark and Petyr challenged Brandon for her hand. Brandon defeated Petyr easily but spared his life because Catelyn pleaded for his life. After his recovery Hoster Tully sent him away. Catelyn has not seen him since.

Ser Rodrik proposes that he will go to see him because without his whiskers he is unrecognizable. Catelyn asks the captain to recommend a modest inn. Catelyn gives a silver stag to each oarsmen (for their effort in the quick voyage) to ensure that the captain does not abscond with the bonus. After Ser Rodrik leaves Catelyn tries to get some sleep but is woken by men of the City Watch of King's Landing. They are to escort her to the castle, and the leader shows her a ribbon with the seal of a mockingbird in grey wax—it is Petyr’s seal. The soldiers do not know who she is. As she prepares to accompany the soldiers she wonders how Pety knew she was in King’s Landing and what might have happened.

She is escorted to a tower room occupied by Petyr, who is alone. She asks why she was summoned; she is obviously upset about being summoned. She has not seen him in years, and he had not changed that much, having grown from a small boy into a small thin man shorter than her. She then asks how he knew she was in the city. He responds that Lord Varys told him that she had arrived; Petyr adds that the Varys, the King’s Spider, knows everything that happens in the city. Petyr tells it was fortunate Varys discovered her presence first. Still Varys does not know why she is in King’s Landing. Petyr then asks why she is there, and she tells him that she wanted to see her husband and daughters. Petyr does not believe this, and asks her to let him help her. They are joined by Lord Varys (a courtesy since he is lord of nothing) who stressed Petyr's remark by inquiring about Bran's health. Varys continues by telling of his respect and esteem for the King and Lord Eddard. Varys than tells her that there are many healers in the city and given the word would send one to Winterfell. Catelyn declines.

Then Varys asks to see the dagger, which surprises Catelyn. Catelyn then asks Varys what he did to Ser Rodrik. Petyr asks about what dagger and who is Ser Rodrik. Varys tells her that he and Ser Aron are in the inn wondering what happened to Catelyn. Catelyn then shows the dagger to them; Varys does not recognize the dagger, but it is Petyr states he recognizes. The dagger belonged to him he claimed, until he lost it. He had backed Jaime Lannister in a tourney. Jaime was defeated by Loras Tyrell and so Petyr's dagger was won by Tyrion Lannister.
