Synopsis

Catelyn and Ser Rodrik are on the road back north to Winterfell. It is raining, and Ser Rodrik tells her that she should cover her head to keep her from a chill. Cat replies that it is only water, and is enjoying on her face; it takes her back to her childhood with her brother and sister and Littlefinger. Unlike the south, in the north the rain was cold and hard. Rodrick states it would be good if they had a fire and a warm meal. Cat tells him that there is an inn, the Crossroads Inn, ahead; she had slept there many times when traveling with her father. It was run by a fat woman named Masha Heddle. Ser Rodrick states that an inn would be too public and would be best to find a small holdfast if they did not want to be recognized. They come upon a soldiers led by a lord Jason, a bannerman to Catelyn's father. As the party passes, Jason looks right at her and does not recognize her. Cat does not believe that they will be recognized, so they can stay at the inn.

At the inn, they are met by Masha Heddle, who gives them only a cursory look, tells them there are only two rooms available; there is none of the smiles or mention of sweet cakes that Cat remembered. After changing into dry cloths she thinks from here they could go west to Riverrun where she could get advice from her father, but he has not well for a couple of years. To the east is the Eyrie and her sister; her sister might be able to provide some answer, but the road across the mountains was too dangerous. She decides that it is best to go north to Winterfell. Once past the neck they could get aid from one of the bannermen of the House Stark. Then she could tell the bannerman to send riders north to Robb Stark with orders to place a watch on the Kingsroad. She then turns her thoughts to the reliability of the riverrun’s banners; Robert's Rebellion had shown how unreliable they were, in particular Freys who had come the side of the Tullys after the Battle of the Trident was won. This left doubt as to which army he had come to join. Her father ever after called Walder Frey the “Late Lord Frey.” Other banners had fought for King Aerys II. She was sure her father would call his banners, but not sure they would all come. Cat then thinks how it must not let this come to war.

Ser Rodrick comes to her to escort her to dinner, telling her that they must hurry if they are to eat, and calling her “my lady.” Cat tells him that he must not call her “my lady,” and they should probably pretend to be a father and daughter, and he calls her My Lady again, and then realizes what he just did: he comments on how old ways die hard.

They enter the long drafty common room with benches crowded with a wide variety of people. Cat see nobody that should recognize her. Ser Rodrick finds them a place by the kitchen where they are accosted by the singer Marillion asking about them and where they started and were headed. The When Cat answers the safest of the questions with them coming from King's Landing. The singer tells them that is his destination for the Tourney of the Hand. The singer is disappointed when Cat had not heard about him, and proceeds to attempt to get paid a silver for a song. Ser Rodrick, believing that any healthy boy would prefer a sword to a lire, tells him he might have a couple of coppers but would tossing them down a well to hearing the boy’s howling. The singer then tells how he was made to sing for kings and high lords, the Cat then asks if he ever played for Lord Tully. The singer states that even a chamber is kept for him and the young Lord Tully like a brother. This amuses Cat who knows her brother hated singers after one had bedded a girl he liked. It is then that the door bangs open and the arrival of Tyrion is announced, with a demand for room and a bath for Tyrion. When Tyrion is told by Masha Heddle that there are no rooms, Tyrion announces that his servants can sleep in the stable, and he needs only a small room. After it is repeated that there is no rooms, Tyrion takes a gold coin and flips it into the air. A free rider tells Tyrion he is welcome to his room, and Tyrion flips the coin to the man. When Tyrion then asks if she can manage food, she says she can. After Tyrion declares that he wants some sort of roast fowl and the best wine sent up to his room, and asks Yoren to join him, the singer stands and tells Tyrion that he can sing to him of his father’s victory at King's Landing. Tyrion replies that such a song would probably ruin his dinner, and then spies Cat. It takes a second for Tyrion to recognize Cat. He tells her he was sorry he missed her at Winterfell. Cat decides to play her hand. She asks some of the men in the room directly if their lords are true to her father, Lord Hoster Tully. The Brackens, Freys and Whents are all represented in the room. Tryion is confused, and asks what Cat is doing, and sniggers at one of the comments. Cat, knowing she has him, then tells how Tyrion was a guest in her home, and had sent an assassin to kill her son. She then asks that they help her bring Tyrion to wait the King’s justice in Winterfell. A dozen men draw swords. Cat is pleased with the look Tryion’s face as he is taken captive.
