Daenerys must eat a raw stallion’s heart and it is still steaming, tough and stringy. The heart of the stallion will make her son strong and swift and fearless if she eats it all. If she chokes on the blood or retches the omens were not so good and her child could be weak, deformed, stillborn, or female. She had prepared herself for days this event, her handmaidens helping her by serving her blood and dried horse flesh, and repeating the words she would have to say after completing the task. She had not eaten for a day and half. As she eats her stomach roils and heaves and she has to rip apart the tough meat. Khal Drogo stands over her as she eats, his face hard, but in the end she thinks she can see a pride in his eyes. When she is done she pronounces the words to the dosh khaleen, the crones. Even the most powerful Khals bow to the wisdom and authority of these crones, each of whom had been a khaleesi; when a khal dies, his Khaleesi joins the dosh khaleen. The crones proclaim the prince is riding, a strong boy, and then start to chant. After crowd finishes chanting, there is silence, and then a crone announces the greatness of the new prince, the Stallion Who Mounts the World, and the crowd repeats this. Then Daenerys has to reveal the name of her son, Rhaego; she gives this name to honor her older brother. Khal Drogo leads her out of the pit, with his Bloodriders behind, and then followed by rest, along the Godsway. As they walk, Drogo asks about the name, and she tells him he is named after her brother, a fierce warrior that died before she was born; the last of the dragons. Drogo states it is a good name.

She calls for him to join her at her table. When he arrives she asks about her brother and is told he went to the market. She asks him why she let him go alone since the usurper would pay well for his head. He tells her that he should be safe since nobody can carry a blade or shed a man’s blood. When Viserys moves to sit with the three Karls, Drogo raises, states some words, and instructs Ser Jorah is to translate that his place is not on the high bench. Then he points to the back of the hall where the lowest of the low sit as instructed by Drogo. Viserys stated it is no place for a king, but Drogo emphasizes that it is his place. Viserys draws his blade, which angers the Dorthraki. He then stalks to Daenerys. She begs him to throw away the sword. Viserys now demands his crown, otherwise he is taking Daenerys back, along with the egg, but will be happy to cut the bastard out of Daenerys and leave it for Drogo; he is both weeping and crying. Viserys sword blade is on her belly, pricking her navel through her silks.

Viserys asks what the Khal said and Daenerys translates ”you shall have a splindid golden coin that men shall tremble to behold.” Viserys replies that is all he wants, smiling. Drogo orders his Bloodriders seize the men, breaking arm in the process, and pulling the sword from his fingers. Drogo puts his gold belt into an emptied stew pot to melt. Viserys finally starts to struggle, but cannot get loose of the Bloodriders. Ser Jorah tells her to look away, but she refuses. When the gold is half melted, Drogo upends the pot over Viserys’ head. Synopsis

The stallion’s heart is still raw and steaming when it is placed before Daenerys. As part of the ancient Dothraki motherhood ritual she begins to eat the tough, stringy flesh. The Dothraki believe that the heart of the stallion will make her son strong and swift and fearless. If she chokes on the blood or retches the omens are less favorable: the child could be weak, deformed, stillborn, or female. In preparation, Daenerys has eaten bowls of blood and dried horse flesh and fasted for a day and a half, yet still her stomach roils and her jaw aches.

Khal Drogo stands over her as she eats, his face hard, but as she continues Daenerys begins to see pride in his eyes. When she is done, Daenerys pronounces the words she has rehearsed to the dosh khaleen, the crones of Vaes Dothrak. Even the most powerful khals bow to the wisdom and authority of these crones, each of whom is the khaleesi of a dead khal.

The crones proclaim “The prince is riding; a boy, a boy, a strong boy” and begin to chant. After the crowd finishes chanting there is silence. Then one of the crones announces the greatness of the new prince, the Stallion Who Mounts the World. Then Daenerys reveals the name of her son: Rhaego, in honor of her older brother.

Khal Drogo leads her out of the pit with his bloodriders behind, followed by the rest, down the godsway. As they walk, Drogo asks about the name of their son and Daenerys explains about her brother, a fierce warrior who died before she was born; the last of the dragons. When she emerges from the lake, Doreah brings her a robe of sandsilk, but Drogo waves her away. Daenerys can see his manhood through his trousers and helps him unlace; with three quick strokes, he is done.

They ride down the godsway to Drogo’s tent-hall where there is a great feast prepared for those too low of rank to attend the ceremony. As Dany rides up the aisle, the crowd hails the life within her. When she dismounts, Daenerys cannot find her brother. She sees Ser Jorah in a place of respect in the midst of the hierarchy and invites him to her own table.

Drogo rises and declares through translation that Viserys’ place is not on the high bench but at the back where the lowest of the low sit shrouded in shadow so that others do not have to look upon them. Viserys declares drunkenly that that is no place for a king, but Drogo emphasizes that it is his place, mocking him as the Sore-foot King and the Cart King.
