Synopsis

Daenerys moves through the trampled fields filled with the dead and wounded around the burning town of the Lamb Men, or Lhazareen.Khal Ogo’s Khalasar were attacking the town when Khal Drogo had caught him. Daenarys remembers that Khal Ogo shared in the wedding feast, but this was not Vaes Dothrak. She suspects that some of the villagers had thought that Drogo’s Khalasar arrival were their deliverance. , but then had defeated Khal Ogo, and now the captives were being collected for slaves. The captives from Khal Oga do not seem to fear slavery, but the villagers are different. The Lhazareen look similar to the Dothraki, but now Daenerys can see the difference. The enslaved thousands who would be sold to provide gold for the ships Drogo’s khalasar would need to cross the poison sea. When asked what to do with the raped girl, Daenerys tells Doreah to see to her hurts. Then Daenerys goes into the village and saves all the others she sees. Ser Jorah tells her that she cannot claim them all

Ser Jeroh Mormont meets her at the entrance to the village. He had been mocked as a coward when he donned the armor, but he exchanged insults, and a Dothraki ride fell before Ser Jeroh. He has the news that Drogo had killed the Khal and his son, and taken wounds. He also tells Daenerys that most of Khal Oga’s khalizar fled, but there could be 10,000 captives, continuing that he has told Drogo that they should sell the slaves at Meereen; they will pay better than a slaving caraven, and a plague there has increased prices. This will bring them all the gold they need for the ships. Daenarys can only think about this being the price of the Iron Throne, while listening to the wails of a girl being raped. Daenarys orders Ser Jorah, Jhogo and Quaro stop the rape. Ser Jorah tries to tell her it is not wise since the men have shed blood for the Khal and this is their reward and then Jhogo and Quaro tell her that it is considered an honor the riders are giving the girl, with Irri concurring. She is not dissuaded and Ser Jorah to help, he tells her that she is truly Rhaegar’s sister.. Two of the rapers have are killed and the other scatter, muttering.

Daenerys finds Drogo with an arrow through his arm and an Arakh cut that had taken his nipple, and left a flap of skin hanging. Drogo tells Daenerys that he only has scratches. Then a warrior, Mago, who rides with Khas of Ko Jhaqo rides up with angry words for Drogo about Daenerys actions. After Drogo hears the rider he listens to his wife. After he tells her that this is the way of war, she states that they should be made wives and given places in the khalasar. Qotho asks Daenerys if a horse breeds with sheep and Daenerys replies that the horse and sheep feed the dragon. Drogo laughs that it is the son inside Daenerys that makes her so fierce, and tells Mago to find another lamb to mount; these belong to the Khaleesi. When Drogo reaches out to her, he winces and Daenerys cries for the healers. She is told that the healers are treating others, that Drogo states that his injuries are just scratches and should be healed first. It is now that a woman, Mirri Maz Duur, speaks up, saying she can help. Aggo is about to cut her throat when Daeneys demands that the woman, who wears the remains of fine clothing, be allowed to speak. Mirri Maz Duur states that she is a healer and Godswife. Drogo’s bloodriders mistrust her, calling her a healer of sheep, and name her Maegi. Daenerys asks how she learned to become a healer, and she states she has learned from many including a maester. The learning from a maester immediately interests Ser Jorah, and he asks for details. Ser Jorah then tells Daenerys that maesters know much of healing. She continues by stating that she was Great Shepherd sent her to earth to heal all lambs. Drogo finally speaks up and tells the godswife to heal him. Drog refuses Haggo’s offer to aid him saying he needs no man to help him to the temple. Daenerys moves up to help him telling him she is no man so can help him. godswife brings Drogo into the remains of her temple, and tells them that is it best if they go, but bloodriders and Daenerys refuse; Daenerys states this woman will do no harm, feeling she could trust this woman since she saved her from rape. The godswife tells them that if they are to remain, they should help since he is too strong for her. She pulls out the arrow, pours boiling hot wine of the wound, then sews the skin back in place. Next she applies a plaster of leaves to the chest wound and tells Drogo not to drink wine nor Milk of the poppy, nor to remove the poultice for ten days. When told he will have a great scar, Drogo states “I sing of my scars.”

Daenerys asks godswife about her speak a birthing song, and leans she is also a midwife; she asks the godswife to help her when she gives birth. Drogo tells her, "You don’t ask a slave, you command them." Qotho lingers so he can tell the godswife “as the khal fares, so shall you.”
