Catelyn, surrounded by guards, waits in the woods near the walls of Riverrun as Robb’s host descends upon Jaime Lannister’s army. Brynden knew the Kingslayer was impatient and would not use outriders, so he was ignorant of Robb’s planned assault. Robb’s men, with some help from Lord Tytos Blackwood leading a sortie from Riverrun, defeat Jaime’s host, taking captive the Kingslayer, three of his cousins, and numerous lords and knights. Jaime slew Daryn Hornwood and Torrhen and Eddard Karstark though. Despite the great victory, Catelyn is unsettled because Lord Tywin is still in the field with a great host at the Trident.

Synopsis

Catelyn is protected by 30 men under the command of Hallis Mollen, the Winterfell captain of the guards, in the warm night of Riverrun as Robb’s host descends upon Jaime Lannister’s army. Robb had wanted 50, and Catelyn 10, and neither was happy. Now she waits again for someone that promised to return from war, as she had with her father, then for Brandon Stark, who never came back, then Eddard Stark who left a fortnight after he married her. Robb had shown no fear as the battle had approached, but she fears for the life of her son, who had been a babe at her breast.

Ser Brynden had lead a screening force of 300 picked men, and they had killed the too few outriders that Jaime has posted. They had driven hard to catch Jaime by surprise. Jaime had had to separate his 12,000 foot into three different camps to be able to besiege Riverrun, and 2,000 to 3,000 horse. The Kingslayer has them 3 to 1, but Ser Brynden is positive that impatience would be his undoing. As Robb’s squire Olyvar Frey helps with his shield and helm, she now sees a tall young knight where her son was. He leaves to let his men see him before the battle as his father had recommended, Grey Wind shadowing him.

Jaime had ridden out three times to chase raiders, and now a few hundred men with House Tully banners lure Jaime into the trap. Horns blow and arrows fly as the trap is closed on Jaime. Catelyn can initially see the moonlight on the lances, but then can only hear the sounds of battle, which eventually die, and then her son arrives on another horse with the blood of one of his men covering an arm and glove. They drag Jaime in front of her, and he tells her that he would offer his sword, but has mislaid it. She asks him for her husband and daughters, and he replies that he mislaid them. Theon calls for his head and Robb tells Catelyn the Lord Rickard Karstark will want his head because he kill his sons Torrhen and Eddard along with Daryn Hornwood. When the Kingslayer had seen he was lost, he charged Robb’s party, hoping to cut Robb down and Robb states that he would be dead if not for those men. Robb orders the Kingslayer taken away with a strong guard in part to protect him from Lord Karstark; Robb considers him more valuable alive, and Eddard would not condone murder of prisoners. They had also taken close to a hundred knights and dozen lord bannerman captive. Catelyn points out that they have only won a battle not the war since, although they took the leader, most of the Lannister host is still besieging Riverrun, and they still have to deal with Lord Tywin Lannister.

Robb tells the others that his mother is right, and the enemy still has Riverrun under seige.
