Aegon Targaryen, the first of his name, also known as Aegon the Conqueror or Aegon the Dragon, was the conqueror of the Seven Kingdoms and the founder of the ruling Targaryen dynasty of Westeros.

Biography

The Targaryens descended from the ancient lord of the Freehold of Valyria 200 years before the Doom of Valyria the family had settled on Dragonstone, then the westernmost outpost of the Valyrian Empire.

According to tradition, Orys Baratheon may have been his bastard brother. As was custom among his family, Aegon married within the family. Instead of just one sister, however, he married both of them: his elder sister, Visenya, and his younger sister, Rhaenys.

According to semi-canon sources, the Voletenes inquired whether Aegon would join them in conquering the the remnants of the Valyrian empire when he was young. He apparently rejected the offer.[1]

From the seat of Dragonstone, he planned for years the conquest of the Seven Kingdoms. When he was prepared, he and his sisters landed with their dragons on the continent of Westeros, at hills that would become the city of King's Landing. With the aid of his sisters and their three dragons (Vhagar, Meraxes, and Balerion the Black Dread) Aegon led the Targaryen army from victory to victory, conquering or subjugating six of the seven kingdoms of Westeros. Aegon dated the beginning of his reign from the day the High Septon annointed him in Oldtown.[2]

After the war, Aegon took the swords of his defeated enemies and had them melted and reforged them into the Iron Throne. He spent the rest of his reign consolidating his power and building his capital at King's Landing.

He died 37 years after setting foot on Westeros. There is no information available about the circumstances of his death or whether he was survived by any of his sisters or an appointed successor.

Appearance

In semi-canon sources, Aegon I is described as tall, powerful, broad shouldered, and very charismatic and commanding, with his hair cut short and wearing his sword Blackfyre and a circle crown of Valyrian steel set with big square-cut rubies.[3]
