He is part of Lord Eddard Stark's retinue when Lord Eddard goes to King's Landing to assume his new function as Hand of the King to Robert I.[2] When Janos Slynt, commander of the City Watch of King's Landing, asks for reinforcements in order to maintain the peace in the city, disturbed by the Tourney of the Hand. Lord Eddard gives him twenty men from his household under the command of Alyn. He takes part in the tourney where he is defeated by Ser Balon Swann.[3]
After the attack on Eddard by Ser Jaime Lannister, it is Alyn who sends a raven to Winterfell with the news of the deaths of Jory Cassel and other members of the escort, and the coma of Lord Stark. He is named captain of the guard in King's Landing upon Jory's death.[4] Alyn is sent with Lord Beric Dondarrion as a standard-bearer of House Stark when the Lord of Blackhaven is commissioned to bring Ser Gregor Clegane to justice.[5]
