Alyssa Velaryon was a member of House Velaryon who became the queen of King Aenys I Targaryen. After becoming widowed she served as Queen Regent to her youngest son, King Jaehaerys I Targaryen, and married Lord Rogar Baratheon.

Appearance

Alyssa had the silvery hair and purple eyes of the Valyrians.[2] After her marriage to King Aenys, Alyssa's personal sigil was a divided field of the Velaryon seahorse heraldry on one side, and the Targaryen dragon heraldry on the other.[3]

History

Alyssa was the daughter of King Aegon I Targaryen's master of ships, Lord Aethan Velaryon,[2] and his wife Alarra Massey.[4] She had several brothers and cousins in House Velaryon.[2]

Alyssa married her cousin, Prince Aenys Targaryen, in 22 AC.[5][2] The marriage was a political match.[6] She gave birth to six children during this marriage: Rhaena (23 AC), Aegon (26 AC), Viserys (29 AC), Jaehaerys (34 AC), Alysanne (36 AC), and Vaella Targaryen (39 AC, died in the cradle).[7][2]

When Queen Visenya Targaryen suggested a betrothal between her own son Maegor and Alyssa's firstborn Rhaena in 24 AC, Alyssa and her husband were opposed the idea. King Aegon I Targaryen eventually agreed to wed Maegor to another. In the later years of Aegon I's reign, when Maegor refused half a dozen dragon hatchlings, Alyssa teased him, asking him whether he was afraid of dragons.[2] Following King Aegon I's sixtieth nameday in 33 AC, Aenys and Alyssa took over the royal progresses, traveling across the realm half of every year.[2]

Upon the coronation of her husband Aenys in 37 AC, Alyssa became queen. It has been suggested that the birth of Alyssa's sixth child, Vaella, in 39 AC is what drove Prince Maegor to take a second wife that same year. Aenys and Alyssa lived in a manse on Visenya's Hill during his reign, as the Red Keep was still not yet complete. In 41 AC, following the first rebellious actions of the Warrior's Sons and Poor Fellows, King Aenys I decided that the manse was not safe for his family, and decided to relocate to Dragonstone. Aenys died the following year on Dragonstone.[2][5] At his funeral, Alyssa sang a dirge for him.[2]

Reign of Maegor

Alyssa left Dragonstone within hours of the funeral, fleeing to her father on Driftmark. She brought her three youngest children, Viserys, Jaehaerys, and Alysanne with her. There, she proclaimed her eldest son, Aegon, the true king of Westeros while Maegor, who had claimed the Iron Throne and been crowned king, laid in a coma in King's Landing.[2] Dowager Queen Visenya eventually traveled to Driftmark and convinced Alyssa to return to court with her children. She was present for Maegor's wedding to Tyanna of the Tower in 42 AC, and even took part in the bedding ceremony. However, her presence started the rumors that she had abandoned Aegon's cause. Regardless of the rumors, in the latter part of 43 AC, Queen Tyanna warned King Maegor that Alyssa had secretly been communicating with Storm's End, the Eyrie, Winterfell, and Casterly Rock in an attempt to convince them to declare for Aegon.[2]

By 44 AC, Alyssa had become a prisoner in all but name to Dowager Queen Visenya on Dragonstone, together with her son Jaehaerys and daughter Alysanne, while her son Viserys was summoned to court to serve as Maegor's squire. When Visenya died in 44 AC, the chaos that followed gave her the opportunity to escape with Jaehaerys and Alysanne. She also stole Dark Sister, Visenya's Valyrian steel sword, from the death Dowager Queen's chambers.[8][2]

Alyssa took her children into hiding, and it was thought that they had crossed the narrow sea, possibly to Tyrosh or Volantis. Alyssa's escape led to the death of her eldest living son, Viserys, who was tortured by Queen Tyanna for nine days until he died. His body was left in the courtyard of the Red Keep, as Maegor hoped Alyssa would return to claim it. She did not return, however, and Viserys was eventually cremated.[8][2] In 47 AC, Ser Theo Bolling, a landed knight who had fought for King Maegor, was arrested by the Kingsguard. He was charged with conspiring with Alyssa to murder Maegor and place her son Jaehaerys on the throne.[2][8]

By 48 AC, Alyssa and her children had arrived at Storm's End, were Lord Rogar Baratheon, the first to give his support to the prince, proclaimed Jaehaerys to be the true and lawful king of the Seven Kingdoms.[9][8][2] Alyssa stood beside her son as he vowed to end Maegor's reign. Nine days after Maegor's death, Jaehaerys returned with his siblings to King's Landing to claim the throne; Alyssa arrived a fortnight later with Lord Rogar and a large host.[2] U

Reign of Jaehaerys

Upon Jaehaerys's coronation Alyssa became the Queen Regent. Jaehaerys decided to pardon most of the lords and knights who had served Maegor, an exception was made for some: the gaolers and confessors who had assisted in the torture and death of Alyssa's son, Prince Viserys were all executed, their heads and hands delivered to Alyssa who was well pleased by the tokens. Jaehaerys didn't desire any of his late uncles Kingsguard serving them and gave them a choice of execution or joining the Night's Watch, all but Harrold Langward choose to take the black. When Ser Harrold demanded a trial by combat, Jaehaerys wished to face the knight himself. In this he was overruled by his Alyssa. Alyssa named as the Crown's champion, Ser Gyles Morrigen who slew Ser Harrold. Alyssa accompanied her surviving children to Oldtown where Jaehaerys successfully reconciled the Iron Throne and the Faith. According to Archmaester Gyldayn, while in Oldtown Alyssa aided her daughter Rhaella in switching Rhaena's twin daughters, disguising Aerea as Rhaella and vice versa.[10] [10][11]

In 49 AC Alyssa was angered and slighted when her daughter Rhaena married Androw Farman on Fair Isle without either informing or inviting her, which caused a rift to slowly develop between mother and daughter. That same year, Alyssa wed the Hand of the King, Lord Rogar, in what became known as the Golden Wedding, a magnificent event which at the end Alyssa recommended that the remaining slots in her sons Kingsguard be filled in a test of arms that became known as the War for the White Cloaks.[12][9][2]

After the weddings conclusion, Alyssa and her new husband along with the small council began to debate about a bride for Jaehaerys, for the realm needed an heir. Jaehaerys was not present for these discussions, as Alyssa knew that he would choose his younger sister Alysanne if the choice was his. Still recalling the uprising of the Faith that followed the wedding when her daughter was wed to her son, the counsellors agreed that another incestuous marriage was out of the question. Despite numerous suggestions, no suitable candidate could be agreed upon. However, the council did agree quickly on a husband for Princess Alysanne: Ser Orryn Baratheon.[12]

Alysanne though learned of her planned betrothal, she informed Jaehaerys, who acted immediately. Both her children and the Kingsguard, quickly and discreetly journeyed to Dragonstone where they married. Rogar and Alyssa arrived soon after the wedding, despairing on what her children had done. Upon learning that the marriage had not yet been consummated as Jaehaerys believed Alysanne to still be too young. Rogar and Alysanne were relieved, Rogar declared they were not married, and ordered his men to secure the royal children. The Kingsguard defied the King's Hand by forming a wall in front of their king and queen, informing Rogar that he would be the first to die if Rogar's men would attack then. Alyssa convinced her husband to return to King's Landing, while Jaehaerys and Alysanne remained behind. [12]

While Jaehaerys and his new wife remained on Dragonstone, Lord Rogar Baratheon and Queen Regent Alyssa Velaryon at King's Landing plotted to undo the marriage, while the realm began to notice Jaehaerys's absence from court, after Jaehaerys and Alysanne did not return to King's Landing for the celebrations of the start of 50 AC.[13] Alyssa and Rogar eventually agreed to sent ladies-in-waiting to Dragonstone to serve Alysanne. Their true purpose, however, was to try and persuade her to rescind the marriage. Despite her youth, however, Queen Alysanne charmed all her ladies-in-waiting, who soon became completely loyal to her. And so, the plan failed. Queen Regent Alyssa finally gave up and told the council they had to accept the marriage, her husband furiously refused and suggested putting Jaehaerys aside and crowning in his stead Princess Aerea, Queen Rhaena's daughter by the deceased Aegon. For this suggestion, Alyssa stripped Rogar of his office of King's Hand. Rogar felt betrayed by his own wife, and the two became estranged. [13]

On the twentieth day of the ninth moon in 50 AC Jaehaerys reached the age of majority and turned sixteen.[13] Upon arriving at the Red Keep Alyssa reconciled with her son. Jaehaerys eventually summoned Lord Rogar Baratheon, though Rogar feared harsh reprimandations, Jaehaerys informed him that he had not forgotten how Rogar had protected him, his mother and family from Maegor and pardoned the Lord of Storm's End, on the condition that Rogar would never again speak another word against him or his queen, and that he'd be an honorable husband to Queen Alyssa. To this, Lord Rogar agreed. Alyssa and Rogar reconciled and left King's Landing for Storm's End, escorted by a hundred men-at-arms led by Ser Pate the Woodcock of the Kingsguard to see them safely through the Kingswood.[14][14]

With him Alyssa had two more children, Boremund and Jocelyn Baratheon.[9][7]

She died in childbirth in 54 AC birthing Jocelyn.
