A Game of Thrones

He competes in the Tourney of the Hand along with the other Kingsguard knights. He is present in the throne room when Selmy is dismissed, and laughs at his former sworn brother's shame.[4]

A Clash of Kings

Ser Arys is regarded as one of the kinder Kingsguard under Joffrey I, often making pleasant conversation with Sansa Stark. When Joffrey orders his Kingsguard to beat Sansa Stark, Ser Meryn Trant, Ser Boros Blount, Ser Preston Greenfield and Ser Mandon Moore carry out the command without qualm or question. Arys, when ordered, hits Sansa but as lightly as he dares, and only after objecting first.[2] He is also skilled with the lance, displaying absolute confidence in his ability to win a small tournament on King Joffrey's name day, despite the presence of other Kingsguard. Ser Arys is sent to the kingdom of Dorne to guard Princess Myrcella Baratheon, who is betrothed to Trystane Martell.[5]

A Storm of Swords

Lord Tywin Lannister informs his son Tyrion that Ser Arys Oakheart has sent a letter from Dorne, revealing Myrcella and her betrothed Trystane Martell get on well and that Myrcella has taken a great liking to Princess Arianne.[6]

A Feast for Crows

Arys is seduced within half a year[7] by Princess Arianne Martell, daughter of Prince Doran Martell and heiress to the throne of Dorne. She convinces him to rebel against the Iron Throne and support Myrcella's claim over her brother Tommen's.[8] When the conspiracy is uncovered, Arys stages a mad charge into Martell forces, killing two of their number before being killed himself by Areo Hotah, the captain of Prince Doran's guard.[9]

Quotes

You know I have no other woman. Only... duty. [8]

- Ser Arys to Arianne Martell

There have always been men who found it easier to speak vows than to keep them. [8]
