Lady Baela Targaryen was a daughter of Prince Daemon Targaryen and Lady Laena Velaryon.[1] Her twin sister was Rhaena Targaryen. She was a dragonrider, whose dragon was Moondancer.[1]

Appearance and Character

Baela was slim and short of stature,[4] lean, and quick. She had silver hair that was cropped as short as a boy's, so it would not whip about her face when she was riding.[5] Baela was as fearless as her father.[1] She was a wild and willful young maiden, more boyish than ladylike. She knew naught of fear, and lived to dance and hawk and ride. As a young girl she was oft chastised for wrestling with squires in the yard, and as she grew older she played kissing games with them.[4] She loved to ride and fly. She was known to be deliberately provocative at times.[5] She was quick to anger.[6]

History

Baela was born in Pentos in 116 AC.[7] She was named after her paternal grandfather, Prince Baelon Targaryen.[7] When Baela was half a year old, she and her mother and twin sister sailed from Pentos to Driftmark.[7] In 117 AC, she and Rhaena were presented to the King, Viserys I Targaryen, by their father, Prince Daemon Targaryen.[8] In 118 AC, with the blessing of the king, Baela was betrothed, at the age of two, to Prince Jacaerys Velaryon, her cousin and step-brother.[7] Rhaena and Baela each had a dragon egg. Rhaena's hatchling was unhealthy and died within hours of emerging from the egg. However, Baela's hatchling, Moondancer, was healthy. Baela grew up on Dragonstone.[1]

During the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, Baela remained on Dragonstone. Though she announced her intent to marry Prince Jacaerys at once, no wedding was ever held, as Munkun claims that the prince did not wish to wed until the war was over, whilst Mushroom claims he was already married to Sara Snow.[9] After her step-mother Rhaenyra won the Iron Throne, Baela divided her days between Dragonstone and Driftmark.[4] Towards the end of the Dance, as Dragonstone fell to King Aegon II Targaryen, Baela was able to escape from her bedchambers as the door was being smashed down. She managed to reach Moondancer in the stable where the castle dragons were kept. There she loosed her chains and strapped a saddle onto her. As Aegon II flew Sunfyre over Dragonmont's smoking peak and made his descent, Baela rose up on Moondancer to meet him.[1]

The dragons fought in the pre-dawn sky, eventually slamming into the ground still fighting. Aegon jumped from the saddle twenty feet from the ground but Lady Baela stayed with Moondancer all the way down. Burned and battered, she still found the strength to undo her saddle chains and crawl away from her dragon as Moondancer coiled into her death throes. Ser Alfred Broome drew his sword to slay Baela, but Ser Marston Waters wrenched the blade from his hand. Tom Tangletongue carried her to Maester Hunnimore.[1]

After the ascension of her cousin and half-brother, King Aegon III Targaryen, Baela and Rhaena were thought to be the only living Targaryens aside from the king and queen, as Prince Viserys was presumed dead at the time. As the elder twin, Baela was considered heir to the Iron Throne by many. She bristled at being the center of court life in King's Landing. She had a taste for unsuitable companions, such as a comely young juggler, a blacksmith's apprentice whose muscles she admired, a legless beggar, a conjurer of cheap tricks, the squire of a hedge knight, and a pair of twins from a brothel. She often brought stray dogs back to the Red Keep. Neither her septa, Amarys, or the Red Keep's septon, Eustace, could curb her of her wild ways.[5]

In 132 AC, it was agreed that Baela should be wed soon before she could bring dishonor upon House Targaryen. Lord Kermit Tully, Lord Benjicot Blackwood, Lord Lyonel Hightower, Lord Dalton Greyjoy, Prince Qyle Martell, and the self-proclaimed King of the Stepstones, Racallio Ryndoon were considered, before the Hand Ser Tyland Lannister and the council regency decided to betroth her to the twice-widowed Lord Thaddeus Rowan. Baela did not share the small council's pleasure in the match, with Lord Rowan being forty years her senior and very large. She then told the Hand that she had bedded two of Rowan's sons, but it is unknown if there was any truth to this. Ser Tyland sent Baela to her rooms and posted guards at her door until the regents could convene.[5]

A day later, she fled the castle and hired a fisherman to carry her to Driftmark. There she sought out her cousin, Lord Alyn Velaryon and poured out her woes to him. A fortnight later, they were married. Though some outraged regents asked Ser Tyland to appeal to the High Septon for an annulment, the Hand's response was of bemused resignation, and put it about that the marriage had been arranged by the king and court, believing the scandal was Baela's defiance rather than her choice of husband. Afterwards, it was agreed that Baela could certainly not be heir to the Iron Throne after such an action.[5]

Baela and Alyn's marriage was famously stormy,[5] with Baela knowing of the rumors that her husband was involved with the Princess of Dorne.[10] In 133 AC, Baela fell with child for the first time. If the child was a son, he would be considered an heir to the Iron Throne. Lord Alyn told her to name the child Corlys, after his grandfather, while Baela declared the child would be named Laena, after her mother.[11] A daughter, Laena, was indeed born to her in 134 AC.[10]

After the Winter Fever of 133 AC killed the Hand and much of the king's small council, Aegon wanted Baela back at court with her husband as master of ships, but this decision was reversed as the king had not consulted with his regents.[11]

In 133 AC, while her husband was at Oldtown, he sent a letter to Baela after the news of Queen Jaehaera's death was received, and the announcement of the king's betrothal to Myrielle Peake shortly after. The contents of the letter are not known, but Baela and Rhaena arrived in King's Landing with Baela's young ward, Daenaera Velaryon, for the ball known as the Maiden's Day Cattle Show. The king announced he would marry Daenaera at the end of the ball,[11] causing Lord Unwin Peake to dislike Baela even more.[10].

In 134 AC, Prince Viserys Targaryen returned to court. As the brother of the king, there was no longer any question of Baela inheriting the Iron Throne.[10].

By 136 AC, Baela was pregnant with her second child. She declared she would come to the king's sixteenth nameday celebrations whether she was wanted or not.[6]

Quotes

So it came to pass that when King Aegon II flew Sunfyre over Dragonmont's smoking peak and made his descent, expecting to make a triumphant entrance into a castle safely in the hands of his own men, with the queen's loyalists slain or captured, up to meet him rose Baela Targaryen, Prince Daemon's daughter by the Lady Laena, and fearless as her father.[1]
