Barba Bracken was a member of House Bracken. She was a companion of the princesses in the Maidenvault and became Aegon IV Targaryen's fifth mistress.
Appearance
Barba was buxom[2] and had dark hair.[3] The Blackwoods claim she was not as beautiful as Melissa Blackwood.[2]
History
On the death of King Baelor I Targaryen and the ascension of King Viserys II Targaryen in 171 AC, the princesses and their companions were once again allowed male companionship. Aegon became entranced with sixteen-year-old Barba.[4]
On his own ascent in 172 AC, Aegon named her father, Lord Bracken, as his Hand and openly took Barba for his mistress. She bore him a bastard only a fortnight before Queen Naerys delivered twins, a stillborn boy and a girl Daenerys. With the queen lingering near death, the Hand talked openly of wedding his daughter to the king. After the queen’s recovery, the scandal proved Barba’s undoing, as young Prince Daeron and his uncle, Prince Aemon the Dragonknight, forced Aegon to send her and the bastard away.[4]
One day, when Aegon was visiting Stone Hedge, he went out hunting, and saw the hills known as the Mother's Teats. Aegon named them Barba's Teats for his mistress. While Barba was buxom, Melissa Blackwood was slender in shape. Barba, after Melissa had replaced her, was once heard to have said that Melissa was as flat as a boy. When word got back to King Aegon, he renamed the hills from Barba's Teats to Missy's Teats to honor his newer mistress.[2]
Family
Barba's younger sister, Bethany Bracken also became one of King Aegon IV mistresses. Barba bore the king one bastard: Aegor "Bittersteel" Rivers.
