The Battle of Duskendale is one of the final battles of the War of the Five Kings. Its only lasting effect is to bleed the forces further and weaken the noble houses of the North.

Background

Lord Roose Bolton orders Robett Glover to take the better part of the northern foot south and meet up with Ser Helman Tallhart and his garrison from the Twins to march on Duskendale.[3] With both of their strongholds in the North having been seized by the ironborn, both men are keen for vengeance; likewise their Hornwood and Cerwyn men had lost their lords in the war. The army burns its way towards the town.

Meanwhile, after the victory over Stannis Baratheon at the Battle of the Blackwater and the new alliance between House Lannister and House Tyrell, the two houses loyal to King Joffrey Baratheon have combined their forces. Lord Randyll Tarly marches with a sizable Reach-Stormlands army to catch the northern force at Duskendale and throw them back.

Battle

Northmen: House Glover, House Tallhart, House Karstark, House Hornwood, House Cerwyn

Joffrey loyalists: Reachmen: House Tarly, House Leygood, House Ambrose, House Fossoway of Cider Hall, House Fossoway of New Barrel. Westermen: House Clegane. Crownlanders: House Rykker. Also, "many from the Stormlands".

Ser Helman Tallhart is killed during the battle, and the northmen are forced to retreat. As Robett Glover falls back he encounters Ser Gregor Clegane, who had marched from Harrenhal and cut off his retreat. Caught between the sea, Lord Tarly and Ser Gregor, the army is annihilated.[4]

Aftermath

Robett Glover is taken prisoner along with Harrion Karstark. The northern foot is destroyed, which hurts King Robb Stark's ability to retake the North. It is later revealed that Lord Roose had secretly defected to the Lannister side and in his attempt to diminish the northern lords' ability to attack him, he had sent the northern army to its destruction.[5]

The northmen are buried in a common grave by the sea marked only by a wooden sign reading "HERE LIE THE WOLVES", while Lord Tarly's less numerous dead are buried in heroes' tombs beneath the septs of Duskendale. Brienne of Tarth notices many used weapons, armor, and clothing from the battle available for sale at Duskendale's market square.[6]
