The Battle of Ashford was a battle fought during Robert's Rebellion between royal and rebel forces at Ashford, the seat of House Ashford. Lord Mace Tyrell, Warden of the South took the credit for the Loyalist victory, however Lord Randyll Tarly had done nearly all the fighting.

Prelude

With the Stormlands united behind him, Robert, left his brother Stannis to hold Storm's End and advanced west to Ashford.[1] Ashford located within the Reach, sworn to Highgarden and likely was a loyalist holding. It is possible, that Robert tried to take Ashford, to secure Stormlands western flank against the Tyrell's threat, who could master the largest army or he was outmaneuvered by Randyll Tarly.

Battle

The battle occurred when the van of the Tyrell's army under command of Randyll Tarly ran into Robert Baratheon's forces. Tarly's forces overran Robert's army Robert was forced to withdraw from the field, even before the main force of the Tyrell's host had joined the battle.[2]

Former Targaryen loyalist Lord Cafferen, who had joined the rebels after his defeat at the Battle of Summerhall, was cut down by Randyll Tarly whilst fighting for Robert. Tarly had his head sent to Aerys II.[1]

Aftermath

The result of the battle was marked by Tyrion as inconclusive, thus it's likely the battle was not very large and Robert's forces remained relatively intact.[2] However, faced with the large numbers of Tyrell main force, Robert had no choice but to withdraw from the Stormlands and attempt to link up with his allies in the north. To this end he force-marched his troops north towards the Riverlands. Robert withdrawal from the Stormlands allowed the victorious Tyrell army to invade the Stormlands and lay siege on Storm's End held by Robert's brother Stannis Baratheon.
