Bertrand Tyrell was the Lord of Highgarden and head of House Tyrell during the early reign of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen.[2]

Character

According to Archmaester Gyldayn, Lord Bertrand was a well-known drunkard.[2] Lord Manfryd Redwyne held an unfavorable opinion of his liege, believing that the Tyrells were dolts and Lord Bertrand a sot.[1]

History

When Lord Daemon Velaryon resigned the office of Hand of the King in 54 AC, several names were brought up and then quickly dismissed as potential replacements. Lord Bertrand was among them, for he was known to be a drunkard and the small council feared that his unruly sons would bring disgrace to the Crown.[2]

In the terrible winter of 59 AC, the Shivers hit Highgarden. Bertrand sickened but survived, only to perish, drunk, in a fall from his horse four days after his recovery.[1] He was succeeded as Lord of Highgarden and Lord Paramount of the Mander by his young son, Martyn.[1]

Quotes

The Tyrells are dolts. I am sorry, Your Grace, they are my liege lords, but ... the Tyrells are dolts, and Lord Bertrand was a sot as well.[1]

Family

Bertrand had at least one legitimate son and heir, Martyn. He also had several unruly bastard sons.[2]
