The Vale of Arryn and the location of Breakwater

Breakwater, also called Breakwater Castle,[1] is a castle which defends the town of Sisterton in the Three Sisters, which are ruled by the Vale of Arryn. The castle is the residence of House Borrell, Lords of Sweetsister and Masters of Breakwater Castle.

Layout

Breakwater is built partially on huge, stone arches that stand as bulwarks against the Bite.[2] Entry to Breakwater is by a bridge of black basalt and a rusty iron portcullis. Its defenses include a deep salt moat and a drawbridge supported by two massive chains, followed by a larger gatehouse of algae-covered stones. Steps lead to Breakwater's cavernous stone keep. Its entrance is covered by threadbare Myrish carpet.[1]

Breakwater's hall is gloomy and has a leaky roof. Only four of its twenty wall-mounted sconces hold torches. A white spider crab on a grey-green field, the sigil of House Borrell, is embroidered on a banner above the hall's hearth. Beneath the castle are dungeons.[1]

The Night Lamp, the black tower lighthouse of Sisterton,[1] is possibly located at Breakwater.

History

Near the start of Robert's Rebellion, Lord Eddard Stark washed up on Sweetsister while trying to sail from the Vale of Arryn to the north to raise his banners. Lord Borrell, the father of Godric Borrell, could have turned Eddard over to King Aerys II Targaryen for a reward, but instead freed him, saying, "If you lose, you were never here."[1]

Recent Events

A Dance with Dragons

The Lionstar stops at Sisterton and Lord Godric Borrell hosts Ser Jared, Rhaegar, and Symond Frey.[1]

After being caught at the Belly of the Whale, Davos Seaworth is taken to Godric inside Breakwater. After hosting Davos with brown beer, black bread, and sister's stew made by Gella, Godric allows him to travel on to White Harbor.[1]

Quotes

My hall is cold and damp and dark, but not without some courtesy.[1]
