The Battle of Winterfell was a daring raid that ended in Winterfell being captured and swinging the momentum of the War of the Five Kings.
Prelude
Rodrik Cassel took most of the garrison of Winterfell to relieve the siege by the Ironmen at Torrhen's Square.[1] Dagmer Cleftjaw had been ordered to besiege the castle by Theon Greyjoy as part of his plan to take Winterfell.[2]
Battle
Theon Greyjoy descended on the few remaining guards with only twenty men. He had his best swimmers swim the moat and go over the walls with grappling hooks. From there they snuck up on Alebelly who they slew at the gate, and opened the gate to let the rest of the ironborn in. With speed and surprise they took the remaining garrison unawares.[3]
Aftermath
Theon declared himself the Prince of Winterfell and took Osha and Ramsay Bolton, in the disguise of "Reek", as retainers. Bran Stark,Rickon Stark, Little Walder Frey, Big Walder Frey,Meera Reed, Jojen Reed and Beth Cassel were all kept as hostages.[4] However, Brandon, Rickon, Jojen and Meera escaped. To avoid embarrassment, Theon had Ramsay kill two boys in place of the Starks and announced to the world that they were dead.[5][6]
