Chain is a sellsword in service to the Golden Company. As a serjeant, he is a high-ranking officer,[1] and he claims to be a knight.[2] His given name is unknown.

Appearance and Character

A brusque man, Chain is taller than Young John Mudd, and wears two rusted chains across his chest. Instead of a blade, he uses five feet of heavy linked iron as a whip.[2]

History

Chain's great-grandsire had fought for Daemon I Blackfyre in the Battle of the Redgrass Field and fled to exile across the narrow sea with Bittersteel. His father was a sellsword of the Company, and fathered Chain on a camp follower. He was raised to speak the Common Tongue and think of himself as Westerosi.[2]

Chain and Young John Mudd hold Mistwood for the Golden Company. They keep Lady Mary Mertyns under house arrest and host Arianne Martell's party for a night.[2]

While escorting Arianne part of the way to Griffin's Roost, Chain reveals the story of his family, and tells her he had never set foot in Westeros before the invasion. He also reveals some details about his fellow sellswords, including Young John Mudd's skill with dice, Two Swords' fondness for red haired women, Little Pussy and his lucky cat, the time someone stole Harry Strickland's favorite elephant, and other stories of the members of the Golden Company. He also slips that Lord Jon Connington is planning to seize Storm's End.[2]
