Colemon is a thin[2][3] man with little hair[2] and a long, skinny neck.[4] The apple of his throat is visible.[5] Colemon is much taller than Lord Petyr Baelish.[4]

Colemon wears a threadbare grey cloak lined with squirrel fur.[6] The chain worn by maesters hangs loose around his neck[7] and clinks softly when he walks.[5]

Colemon is often nervous,[2] especially in violent situations.[7] Grand Maester Pycelle considers Colemon to be young,[8] and Lady Anya Waynwood considers Maester Helliweg of Runestone to be more experienced.[5]

History

As the maester in service to Jon Arryn, Lord of the Eyrie, Colemon stayed in King's Landing during Jon's time in the capital as Hand of the King to Robert I Baratheon. When Jon became ill with stomach pain, Colemon purged him with wasting potions and pepper juice.[8] Pycelle, the Grand Maester at the Red Keep, sent Colemon away, but Lord Arryn's condition continued to worsen and he soon died.[9]

After Jon's death, Colemon returned to the Eyrie with the rest of Lady Lysa Arryn's household.[10]

Recent Events

A Game of Thrones

Lady Lysa Arryn commands Maester Colemon to remain at the Eyrie to care for her son, Lord Robert Arryn.[2]

Lord Eddard Stark, the new Hand of the King, investigates the death of his predecessor, Lord Jon Arryn. Grand Maester Pycelle explains that he dismissed Colemon from treating Jon out of fears that the young maester would inadvertently kill his older patient.[8]

Colemon and Ser Vardis Egen greet Lysa's sister, Lady Catelyn Stark, upon her arrival at the Eyrie.[2] When a letter from Ser Edmure Tully arrives to inform about the conflict between Casterly Rock and Riverrun, Colemon tells the sisters' uncle, Ser Brynden Tully, about its contents.[7]

Anxious about the upcoming trial by combat to determine the fate of Tyrion Lannister, Colemon drinks wine brought by Lord Eon Hunter. Colemon lets slip to Catelyn and Ser Rodrik Cassel that Jon Arryn had planned to send his son Robert to Dragonstone, to be fostered by Lord Stannis Baratheon. When Catelyn responds that Robert was to be fostered at Casterly Rock, Colemon insists that Jon had chosen Dragonstone.[7]

A Clash of Kings

During his interrogation by Tyrion Lannister, now the acting Hand of the King, Grand Maester Pycelle reveals his belief that Queen Cersei Lannister had wanted Lord Jon Arryn dead. Colemon had been purging Jon to treat his sudden illness, so Pycelle sent Colemon away and allowed Lord Arryn's condition to worsen.[9]

A Storm of Swords

A shivering Colemon watches for a bit as Alayne Stone (Sansa Stark) builds a snow castle of Winterfell in the Eyrie's garden. When Lord Robert Arryn begins smashing the snow castle with his doll, Sansa rips the doll apart in an effort to stop him. Colemon provides half a cup of dreamwine to calm the outraged boy, and Robert is taken to the maester's chambers for leeching to treat his shaking sickness.[3]

A Feast for Crows

Colemon is present when Lord Petyr Baelish welcomes Lord Nestor Royce and Ser Marwyn Belmore to the Eyrie.[4] He is in attendance when Alayne Stone tells the visitors how Lady Lysa Arryn had been killed by her singer, Marillion,[4] although Petyr was the actual murderer.[3] When Lord Robert Arryn, upon hearing the tale, suffers another attack from his shaking sickness, a grim-faced Colemon has the boy taken back to bed so he can be bled.[4] Colemon later gives Robert dreamwine to help him sleep when the boy claims to hear Marillion singing in the night.[5]

Lord Robert is upset on the day when the Lords Declarant are to come to the Eyrie, and Maester Colemon is struck when the boy throws his bowl of porridge in anger. Colemon expresses his worries about the treatments he gives Robert, as the boy's spells have grown worse since his mother Lysa died. Petyr orders him to add a pinch of sweetsleep to the boy's milk.[5]

During the parley with the Lords Declarant, Lady Anya Waynwood attempts to persuade Petyr to send Robert to Runestone, where Lord Yohn Royce's maester, Helliweg, could treat Robert, claiming that Helliweg is more experienced and better suited to treat Robert's frailties than Colemon.[5]

The day the inhabitants of the Eyrie are to descend to the Gates of the Moon in preparation for winter, Robert throws his chamber pot at Colemon and dirties his hair and robe. The maester goes to Ser Lothor Brune, who informs Alayne. Robert complains to Alayne that Colemon had put something "vile" in his milk. Colemon suggests giving Robert some milk of the poppy so the boy will slumber during the descent, but Alayne refuses the notion. She tells him instead to give Robert a cup of sweetmilk, to which the maester objects, fearing the poison is building up too much in Robert's blood. Colemon reveals that Robert's blood has grown so thin that he had begun to fear leeching the boy, and he fears the boy will bleed from the nose. When Alayne insists that Colemon should give Robert a cup of sweetmilk before the descent, and one shortly after, Colemon insists that it must be the last cup for at least half a year.[6]

When Colemon accompanies Robert and Alayne down the Giant's Lance, he leads a mule laden with chests of herbs and potions.[6]

Quotes by Colemon

Robert: I don't want to be leeched!
Colemon: My lord, your blood needs thinning. It is the bad blood that makes you angry, and the rage that brings on the shaking.[3]

Robert Arryn and Colemon

Petyr: The boy is fond of sweets, is he not?

Colemon: Sweets?
Petyr: Sweets. Cakes and pies, jams and jellies, honey on the comb. Perhaps a pinch of sweetsleep in his milk, have you tried that? Just a pinch, to calm him and stop his wretched shaking.

Colemon: A pinch? One small pinch ... perhaps, perhaps. Not too much, and not too often, yes, I might try ...[5]

Petyr Baelish and Colemon

Quotes about Colemon

Eddard: I have heard that you sent Maester Colemon away.
Pycelle: I did, and I fear the Lady Lysa will never forgive me that. Maybe I was wrong, but at the time I thought it best. Maester Colemon is like a son to me, and I yield to none in my esteem for his abilities, but he is young, and the young ofttimes do not comprehend the frailty of an older body. He was purging Lord Arryn with wasting potions and pepper juice, and I feared he might kill him.[8]

Maester Colemon put something vile in my milk last night, I could taste it. I told him I wanted sweetmilk, but he wouldn't bring me any. Not even when I commanded him. I am the lord, he should do what I say. No one does what I say.[6]

Colemon only wanted the best for his charge, Alayne knew, but what was best for Robert the boy and what was best for Lord Arryn were not always the same. Petyr had said as much, and it was true. Maester Colemon cares only for the boy, though. Father and I have larger concerns.[6]
