Desmond Manderly was the Lord of White Harbor and the head of House Manderly during the Dance of the Dragons.[2]

Character

Desmond was a shrewd negotiator.[2]

History

In 101 AC, the ruling Lord of White Harbor spoke for the succession rights of Princess Rhaenys Targaryen and Laenor Velaryon over Prince Viserys during the Great Council.[3] As such, Ser Otto Hightower feared that Lord Desmond would side with Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and the blacks.[4][5]

At the start of the Dance of the Dragons, Lord Desmond hosted Jacaerys Velaryon when the prince came to White Harbor.[4][5] Desmond cited that the Old King had promised to redress the usurpation and exile of the Manderlys' ancient lands and promised House Manderly the hand of Princess Viserra. In return for his youngest daughter being betrothed to Jacaerys' brother, Prince Joffrey Velaryon, Desmond agreed to support Rhaenyra Targaryen against King Aegon II Targaryen and his greens.[2] Desmond's sons, Ser Medrick and Ser Torrhen, led White Harbor's soldiers during the war.[6]

After the Dance, Torrhen served in King's Landing as a regent during the minority of King Aegon III Targaryen. When the Winter Fever spread past the Bite to White Harbor in 132 AC, Desmond was among the thousands that died. He was succeeded as Lord of White Harbor by his eldest son Medrick, only for him to succumb from the same ailment four days later. Torrhen returned to White Harbor to take his father's and brother's place as Lord of White Harbor.[1][7]

Quotes

Mine own forebears were despoiled of their birthright when our enemies drove us into exile on these cold northern shores. When the Old King visited us so long ago, he spoke of the wrong that had been done to us and promised to make redress. In pledge of that, His Grace offered the hand of his daughter Princess Viserra to my great-grandsire, that our two houses might be made as one, but the girl died and the promise was forgotten.[2]

—Desmond to Jacaerys Velaryon
