Edwell Celtigar was Lord of Claw Isle and head of House Celtigar during the reign of Maegor I Targaryen.[1]

History

Edwell was made Hand of the King in 44 AC after the execution of the last Hand, Lord Lucas Harroway.[1] Maegor left Edwell to rule King's Landing along with Maegor's wife Tyanna of the Tower when Maegor himself left to embark on a new campaign against the Faith Militant uprising in 45 AC.[2]

By 47 AC, Maegor had still failed to produce an heir, and his councilors suggested that he take yet another wife, each offering different candidates. Lord Edwell suggested that he marry more than one additional wife, to increase his chances of producing an heir - and suggested his own two maiden daughters, who were thirteen and twelve years of age. Maegor ultimately took his advice to take more than one new wife, but also paid heed to Alton Butterwell's suggestion that he marry women of proven fertility, so Maegor did not marry either of Celtigar's maiden daughters.

By 48 AC, Maegor's various atrocities and increasingly unstable behavior had turned more and more of the realm against him, and his reign spiralled out of control. Word came that lords Tully, Oakheart, and Rowan had switched sides to the Faith Militant, which was on the march once again. Lord Edwell simply resigned his office as Hand of the King and safely returned to Claw Isle.

Not long afterwards, Maegor's young nephew Prince Jaehaerys declared himself king at Storm's End, and most of the other great lords of the realm rallied to him.[2]
