Gawen Westerling is the Lord of the Crag and the head of House Westerling.[1]

Character

Ser Kevan Lannister describes Gawen as a good man,[4] though believes he has more honor than sense.[2][4]

History

As the Lord of the Crag, Gawen headed an old and proud, though impoverished, family.[2] Gawen wed Sybell of House Spicer, a wealthy House of lowborn origins.[4] This marriage is said to have somewhat sordid origins,[2] and Gawen is rumored to have been entrapped into the marriage.[5]

Gawen once offered his elder daughter, Jeyne, as a match for either Martyn or Willem Lannister, but was rejected because of Jeyne's mother.[4]

Recent Events

A Game of Thrones

At the outbreak of the War of the Five Kings, Lord Gawen rides in Ser Jaime Lannister's host besieging Riverrun. After Jaime's host is drawn away and ambushed by Lord Robb Stark, Gawen is captured by Lord Jason Mallister in the ensuring battle in the Whispering Wood.[6][7]

A Clash of Kings

After being captured, Gawen is held at Seagard by the Mallisters for ransom.[1][7]

During his imprisonment, the Stark army begins attacking the westerlands and soon focuses on capturing the Crag with its lord absent.[8] Gawen's seat is soon captured by the Starks.[9]

A Storm of Swords

Robb conquers Gawen's castle with the storming of the Crag. While still imprisoned at Seagard, Gawen's wife, Lady Sybell Spicer, and castellan, Ser Rolph Spicer, conspire with Lord Tywin Lannister to help bring about Robb Stark's downfall.[10] Gawen is freed from Seagard after his daughter, Jeyne, marries Robb Stark, King in the North, although they wed without his consent.[7]

Gawen is pardoned by the Iron Throne after the Red Wedding.[11]

A Feast for Crows

Gawen is present at the siege of Riverrun. He is with the Lannister-Frey army urging the commanders to settle the siege peacefully, as he is worried about possible retaliations against his family who are within the castle.[12] After Jaime negotiates Riverrun's surrender, Gawen travels with his family back to the Crag.[13]
