Lady Genna Lannister is the daughter of Tytos Lannister. She was made to marry Emmon Frey and has four children with him,[2] or so she claims they are his, no one in Casterly Rock had the courage to ever suggest otherwise, least of all her husband. Genna is the aunt of Cersei, Jaime and Tyrion and took on a maternal role to them after Joanna Lannister's death. She is also one of the few Lannisters who recognizes Tyrion's talent for political maneuvering.

Appearance and Character

In her youth Genna was shapely, later she is described as fat, square with a broad and smooth face. Intelligent and shrewd, Genna bosses around her husband whom she considers inept, an assessment that Jaime shares.[3] Her personality is such that she is able to claim a place in Jaime's war council without opposition, which is uncommon for a woman.[4]

History

Genna recalls to Jaime Lannister that her father accepted Lord Walder Frey's proposal that she marry Walder's second son, Emmon Frey, out of weakness. Her brother Tywin spoke out against the marriage because he did not think it a good match. Genna tells Jaime she loved Tywin because he had spoken out on her behalf. Although Genna was not satisfied with the match, she had four sons with her husband - though some doubt of who fathered them but don't dare to question Genna. She is a domineering wife and frequently snaps at her husband in public.[3]

Recent Events

A Storm of Swords

Two of Genna's sons were killed in the war. Her younger son Tion Frey was killed by Rickard Karstark and his men despite the fact he was an unarmed captive at the time[5] and her eldest son Cleos Frey was killed by outlaws[6].

A Feast for Crows

After the Tullys had been attainted, the crown granted Genna and her husband possession of the Tully lands. As Brynden Tully still held Riverrun, their castle had to be wrest from him. During the siege Genna advised Jaime to execute Edmure Tully, the attainted Lord of Riverrun, because she considered him and his unborn child a possible danger. She would have preferred control of Darry despite it being less rich than Riverrun because House Darry is extinct in the male line, while House Tully is not.[3]

When she reminisced to Jaime about his father Tywin and felt less protected with him gone, Jaime tried to reassure her that Tywin had left a son, her aunt replied she knew that and that was what scared her the most. When Jaime asked why her reply was...

Jaime, sweetling, I have known you since you were a babe at Joanna's breast. You smile like Gerion and fight like Tyg and there's some of Kevan in you, else you would not wear that cloak...but Tyrion is Tywin's son, not you. I said so once to your father's face, and he would not speak to me for half a year.[3]

Upon Edmure Tully surrendering Riverrun, Genna and her husband Emmon hold it with a garrison of over three hundred men.
