The last hero escapes ice spiders.
Art by Roman Papsuev

Giant ice spiders are spoken of in some accounts of the Others. Samwell Tarly, who has been reading the accounts kept at Castle Black, mentions them to Jon Snow, adding that he doesn’t know what they are. [1] (However during the march back to Craster's Keep after the battle Sam does recall that the white walkers of the wood rode giant ice-spiders. [2])

According to Old Nan’s tale of the last hero the Others smelled the hot blood in him and came silent on his trail, stalking the last hero with packs of pale white spiders big as hounds. Presumably they are the same as the giant ice spiders mentioned by Sam. [3]

The Others may use the ice spiders and mounts and to hunt their quarry. They may be native to the Lands of Always Winter or created by the Others. Very little is known of the ice spiders.
