Appearance and Character

Godry is a tall, broad-shouldered and brawny man. He is thought by both Jon Snow and Asha Greyjoy as arrogant and vain, hungry for glory, deaf to caution and a glutton for praise. Godry looks down on smallfolk, northmen, and women.

Recent Events

A Storm of Swords

Ser Godry earns the nickname Giantslayer during the Battle of Castle Black, during which he chases after a fleeing giant, puts a lance in his back, and then hacks off his head.[2]

A Feast for Crows

Godry is among the knights who remain with Stannis Baratheon at Castle Black.

A Dance with Dragons

While in the practice yard, Godry confronts Lord Commander Jon Snow and attempts to goad him into a fight, but Jon ignores him.[2] He is among the queen's men in the common room who witness Jon confront Janos Slynt; he laughs when Slynt refuses to obey Jon's orders.[3] During the execution of "Mance Rayder", Godry rides the horse Mance is tied to, and drags him to the cage where he is burned by Melisandre.[4]

Godry is among those who march with Stannis on Deepwood Motte and then Winterfell. He leads the vanguard of Stannis's army. Godry leads the prayers to R'hllor at the nightfires and constantly urges Stannis to make an offering to R'hllor in order to stop the blizzard slowing the march of the army. He gets his wish when four men are caught in the act of cannibalism and are subsequently staked and burned at the crofters' village.

The Winds of Winter

Along with Clayton Suggs and Richard Horpe, Godry brings in Maester Tybald for questioning by Stannis.[5]
