Gyldayn was an archmaester of the Citadel. He was also the last maester to serve at Summerhall before it burned down.[1] He wrote The Princess and The Queen, or, The Blacks and The Greens, a history of the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. Gyldayn also wrote The Rogue Prince, or, the King’s Brother, about Prince Daemon Targaryen.[2][3]
Gyldayn also wrote a long but incomplete history of House Targaryen. He sent his papers to Archmaester Gerold at the Citadel, likely for for his commentary and approval, where they remained until they were recently discovered by Maester Yandel. Yandel has used Gyldayn's work as a major source for his book The World of Ice and Fire, including a complete history of Aegon's Conquest.[1]
Yandel has discovered other manuscripts by Gyldayn, but many pages have been misplaced or destroyed, and still others have been damaged by neglect and by fire. Still, Yandel believes that more pages will be found one day, and Gyldayn's lost masterwork will be published, as the maesters of the Citadel are greatly excited by what has been discovered so far.[1]
