Ser Gyles Belgrave was a knight from House Belgrave and a member of Aegon II Targaryen's Kingsguard.[1]

History

Ser Gyles commanded the escort of Aegon II Targaryen after his meeting of the small council following the defeat of Lord Borros Baratheon and his army at the Battle of the Kingsroad. The king drank a cup of wine as he commanded Ser Gyles to take his litter to the castle sept before closing the curtains. Ser Gyles upon their arrival at the sept informed the king who did not reply or move from behind the litters curtains. When Aegon did not respond for a third time, Ser Gyles threw back the drapes and found Aegon II dead, blood was on the kings lips. [2]

When the victorious Riverlords arrived at the capital, Ser Gyles along with three of his sworn brothers of the Kingsguard were present as the kings body was laid on a bier beneath the Iron Throne. [2]

During the Hour of the Wolf, Ser Gyles along with the other three Kingsguard were accused of treason after the poisoning of King Aegon II. Cregan accused Ser Gyles of either poisoning the kings wine or failing to in his duty in preventing it from happening, Ser Gyles strongly denied he had poisoned the king. When eventually found guilty Ser Gyles choose death instead of taking the black, saying he that while he did not poison the king he had failed his duty nonetheless. He was personally executed by Lord Cregan Stark of Winterfell who took his head off with Ice. His head along with the head of Larys Strong was mounted by the the gates to the Red Keep. [1][1][3]

Quotes by Gyles

You were not wrong, Lord Stark. A knight of the Kingsguard should not outlive his king.
