The Hall of a Thousand Thrones, is the seat of government in Qarth. The Pureborn rule from this place.

Interior

The Pureborn all are enthroned on great wooden chairs of their ancestors, which rise in curved tiers from a marble floor to a high domed ceiling. The chairs are immense, fantastically carved, bright with gold work, and studded with amber, onyx, lapis and jade. Each one is different from all the others, and each one strives to be the most fabulous.

The domed ceiling is painted with scenes of Qarth’s vanquished glory. The men who sit in the ornate wooden seats seem so listless and world-weary to Daenerys that she thinks to herself that they might have been asleep.

Recent Events

A Clash of Kings

While residing in Xaro Xhoan Daxos’s palace in Qarth Daenerys Targaryen seeks an audience with the Pureborn to plea with them for their fleet of galleys, or part of it and some of their soldiers too.

To open the doors of the Hall of a Thousand Thrones Daenerys tenders bribes in gold to Mathos Mallarawan, Wendello Qar Deeth and Egon Emeros the Exquisite. She makes the traditional sacrifice in the Temple of Memory, offers the traditional bribe to the Keeper of the Long List, sends the traditional persimmon to the Opener of the Door, and finally received the traditional blue silk slippers summoning her to the Hall of a Thousand Thrones.

For the audience Daenerys has to garb herself in Qartheen fashion, as Xaro Xhoan Daxos warns her that the Enthroned will never listen to a Dothraki, so she takes care to go before them in flowing green samite with one breast bared, a belt of black-and-white pearls about her waist and silvered sandals on her feet. About her throat she wears a tight silver collar set with an enchanted amethyst. She wears her crown. She takes Rhaegal on her shoulder.

Despite her pleas the Pureborn tell her no. They say no with great courtesy to be sure, but under all the lovely words the answer is still no. Xaro Xhoan Daxos asks her if she flatted them, she said she did, shamelessly. Xaro Xhoan Daxos then asked her if she wept, Dany replies that the blood of the dragon does not weep. Xaro Xhoan Daxos said she ought to have wept. Mathos said nothing. Wendello praised the way she spoke. The Exquisite refused her with the rest, but he wept afterward.

Quotes

They listened, but they did not hear, or care … They are Milk Men indeed. They never meant to help me. They came because they were curious. They came because they were bored, and the dragon on my shoulder interested them more than I did.
