Ser Harrold Hardyng, often called Harry the Heir and sometimes the Young Falcon,[3] is a gallant, handsome squire and a ward of Lady Anya Waynwood. He is the heir presumptive of Robert Arryn.[3]
Contents
Appearance
Harry is very handsome. He has sandy hair, deep blue eyes and dimples when he smiles.[3] According to semi-canon sources, he has an aquilie nose, and looks every inch a young lord-in-waiting: straight as a lance, clean-limbed, and hard with muscle. It is said that Harrold has the look of Jon Arryn in his youth.[1] Petyr Baelish says that a wife of Harry would be the envy of every highborn maiden in the Vale, as well as a few from the riverlands and the Reach.[3]
According to semi-canon sources, Harrold's personal heraldry that is displayed on his shield is quartered: two quarters display the moon-and-falcon sigil of House Arryn, one displays the arms of House Hardyng, and the last displays the arms of House Waynwood.[1]
History
Youth
Harrold was born the eldest son of a landed knight of House Hardyng and the youngest daughter of Alys Arryn and Ser Elys Waynwood.[3] He was taken in as Lady Anya Waynwood's ward at Ironoaks and was raised there. Harrold is still young but it is rumored that, despite his youth, he has already fathered a bastard daughter.[3]
Harrold later confirms during a tournament at the Bloody Gate to join the Brotherhood of Winged Knights that he has a two year old bastard daughter named Alys, whom he fathered on a girl named Cissy. According to Harrold, childbirth left Cissy "fat as a cow", so Lady Waynwood arranged for her to be married off to one of her men-at-arms. Sometime afterwards, Harrold impregnated the daughter of one of the richest spice merchants in Gulltown named Saffron. She is expected to give birth to his second acknowledged bastard.[1]
Robert's Heir
Harrold Hardyng became the heir to Jon Arryn in 283 AC, but was replaced in that position when Jon Arryn became the father of a son of his own, Robert, in 292 AC.
Harrold is a cousin to Jon Arryn. Jon Arryn's father, Jasper Arryn, had two sons and a daughter. Jon was the eldest of the three. He became the Lord of the Eyrie after his father's death. Jon's younger brother, Ronnel, died as his son, Elbert, was being born. As Jon Arryn himself had no children, Elbert became his heir. In 282 AC, Elbert was killed by King Aerys II Targaryen.[3]
Jon's sister Alys had eight daughters and one son. The boy, the youngest of the nine, died at the age of three, and two of his sisters died not long after, from the pox. The third of the girls became a septa, having been scarred by the pox. Another daughter became a silent sister. One girl was married but proved barren, and another was carried off by mountain clans. The eldest of the daughters was married to Ser Denys Arryn, a distant Arryn cousin. The idea was that their children, in addition to becomming heirs of the Vale, should Elbert die, they would be named "Arryn". Elbert had died in 282 AC, but Denys rode to war and died in the Battle of the Bells during Robert's Rebellion in 283 AC. Both his wife and son died soon after. The youngest of the eight daughters of Alys Arryn had been married to a landed knight who had been sworn to House Waynwood. She gave birth to Harrold, and perished. Years later, Robert Arryn was born to Lord Jon Arryn, leaving Robert as Jon Arryn's heir, and Harrold as the next in line.[3]
Recent Events
A Feast for Crows
During Petyr Baelish's meeting with the Lords Declarant, Lord Yohn Royce states Lord Robert Arryn should befriend Harry at Runestone, but he is rejected.[4]
Gossip holds that, despite his youth, Hardyng has already fathered at least one baseborn child with another on the way. He is knighted by Lord Yohn after winning a small melee for squires held at Runestone.[3]
Petyr, the Lord Protector of the Vale of Arryn, arranges a betrothal between Harrold and Sansa Stark, who is masquerading as Petyr's bastard daughter, "Alayne Stone". He schemes to reveal Sansa's true identity and reclaim Winterfell in her name.[3]
