Ser Harwin Strong, known as Breakbones, was a knight from House Strong and the heir to Harrenhal. He also served as a captain in the City Watch of King's Landing. The rumored lover of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Harwin is believed by some to have been the real father of her three sons with her first husband Ser Laenor Velaryon, (Jacaerys, Lucerys, and Joffrey).[1]

Appearance and Character

Breakbones was said to be the strongest man in the Seven Kingdoms in his day. He was described as being massive and redoubtable.[1]

History

In 105 AC, Ser Harwin was brought to court by his father, Lord Lyonel Strong, alongside his younger brother Larys and his two sisters. Harwin was made a captain in the gold cloaks of King's Landing.[1]

In 114 AC, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen granted Harwin her favor at the tourney celebrating her wedding with Ser Laenor Velaryon. At that tourney, Ser Criston Cole broke his collarbone and shattered his elbow. The fool Mushroom mocked him as "Brokenbones" after this event. Thereafter Harwin was a consistent presence at Rhaenyra's side and was the foremost member among the blacks.[1]

In late 115 AC, according to Septon Eustace, during the birth of Rhaenyra's second son, Lucerys, both Rhaenyra's husband Ser Laenor and Breakbones, were in attendance at her bedside. When Rhaenyra moved to Dragonstone after the rivalry with Queen Alicent Hightower and the greens grow too much, Breakbones went with her as her personal sworn shield.[3][1]

In 120 AC, after Prince Aemond Targaryen called Rhaenyra's sons "Strongs" and a brawl break out, Harwin is removed as Princess Rhaenyra's champion by King Viserys I Targaryen and he returned to Harrenhal, being replaced by Ser Erryk Cargyll of the Kingsguard. Harwin died in a fire at Harrenhal that same year, with it also killing his father, Lord Lyonel Strong. The fire was said to be an accident and blamed on the curse of Harrenhal. Other non-mystical suspects included Prince Daemon Targaryen, whose motive would have been eliminating a rival for Princess Rhaenyra's affections; Lord Corlys Velaryon, as revenge for Harwin cuckolding his son; Harwin's brother, Larys, to claim the inheritance of Harrenhal; and King Viserys I, to eliminate the man who brought dishonor on his House.[1]

Notes:
  1. Both Grand Maester Munkun and Septon Eustace believed Alys Rivers to have been the bastard daughter of Lord Lyonel Strong.
  2. In 132 AC, Alys claimed to have wed Prince Aemond before his death.
