A hedge wizard is a Westerosi local or traveling herb-doctor or witchdoctor who also likely uses traditional healing, spells and charms to heal the sick or help the needy.

Like hedge knights they are probably quite poor and sleep in hedges on occasion. They are probably most popular amongst the smallfolk as they are likely to be more affordable and accessible. Nobles probably do not employ the services of hedge wizards or if they do so they do it clandestinely.

Some hedge wizards may be charlatans, quacks and snake oil salesmen.

A hedge wizard is likely a wizard of low ability, perhaps self-taught or with a poor education background. Some may have apprenticed to a mentor hedge wizard. Some hedge wizards are probably more genuine and talented than others.

The birth of Daenerys Targaryen’s dragons may have made even a hedge wizard's spells and charms more powerful.
