House Baratheon of Dragonstone is a cadet branch of House Baratheon of Storm's End. Its seat is Dragonstone, an island that sits off the mainland to the northeast of King's Landing. Its founder and current head is King Stannis I, who seized the island at the end of Robert's Rebellion. Originally, Stannis used the crowned stag of the Baratheons, but during the War of the Five Kings, he took for his personal banner a crowned stag enclosed within a red heart surrounded by a blaze of orange fire on a field of sun yellow.[1] By the time of the Battle of Castle Black he has apparently joined this with the traditional banner of House Baratheon, a black stag on "a sheet of beaten gold". [2]

History

It was formed in 283 Al after the War of the Usurper when the new king, Robert I, named his younger brother, Stannis, Prince of Dragonstone.[3] Stannis took the title as a slight, since he would have preferred the richer lands of Storm's End, the ancestral Baratheon castle, but Robert wanted a strong leader in the old seat of House Targaryen. Around 287, Lord Stannis took Selyse Florent to wife. During the Greyjoy Rebellion of 289, Stannis, as Robert's Master of Ships, led the Baratheon fleets to victory in the Battle of Fair Isle. Since then Stannis and Selyse have conceived their daughter, Shireen, although their marriage remains loveless.

Recent Events

Stannis was the first to suspect that Queen Cersei's children were not also Robert's. While investigating the matter with the Hand of the King, Lord Jon Arryn, Stannis agreed to foster Jon's son Robin on Dragonstone. Neither this nor the moment of revealing the information to Robert came, however: Lord Arryn was poisoned and Stannis retreated to Dragonstone to call his banners. Before he could return to King's Landing, Robert too was dead, and the realm poised for war. Sending letters throughout the realm, Stannis proclaimed himself the rightful king over the queen's baseborn abominations. Although the poor lands of Dragonstone allowed for little support for his claim, the religion and magic of Melisandre of Asshai has given focus to Stannis' cause, allowing for the assassination of his brother Renly I and the defection of most of his bannerhouses. The red religion has become a point of conflict among the House's sworn swords and lords bannermen, with its supporters and fervent believers labeled Queen's Men, and those who cleave to the Faith of the Seven called King's Men. The House's subsequent contest against House Baratheon of King's Landing was denied in the Battle of the Blackwater, forcing Stannis to retreat. The support of Selyse's family, House Florent, has been important for Stannis, but he resents their meddling. He has since traveled to the Wall and won the Battle of Castle Black, beginning his campaign to win the North. The Iron Throne's forces have taken Dragonstone, and the Golden Company threatens Storm's End. He currently is assaulting Winterfell, held by House Bolton, while Queen Selyse remains at the Wall, where she engages in marrying her knights to various wildlings.
