A Storm of Swords
In the aftermath of the Red Wedding, Lord Edmure Tully is attainted by the crown, and stripped of Riverrun and all its lands and incomes. As part of the deal between Lord Tywin Lannister and Lord Walder Frey for betraying Robb Stark at the wedding, the lands, incomes, and castle are granted to Ser Emmon Frey and his wife Lady Genna Lannister.[2] Emmon is to receive Riverrun once Ser Brynden Tully yields the castle.[1]
A Feast for Crows
Brynden Tully refuses to yield, and the castle is besieged by a Frey and Lannister army.[3][4][5] Since the siege of Riverrun has become a stalemate, Ser Jaime Lannister takes the command from Ser Daven Lannister and Ser Ryman Frey. Lord Emmon is present at the siege, demanding that the castle should not be damaged by storming the walls, while his wife Genna Lannister believes they should execute the hostage Edmure Tully as attempting to use him to convince Ser Brynden to yield has proved fruitless. Lord Emmon falsely believes lordship over Riverrun makes him the ruler of the riverlands, but his nephew Jaime reminds him that Riverrun is now sworn to Harrenhal, the seat of Petyr Baelish, Lord Paramount of the Trident.[6]
During a meeting at the castle's drawbridge, Brynden rejects Jaime's terms of surrender. After Jaime tells the captive Edmure he will sacrifice rivermen in an assault and launch Edmure's unborn child into the castle,[7] Edmure negotiates Riverrun's surrender from House Tully to House Frey. After the castle has been transferred, Emmon is furious when it is discovered that Brynden has escaped through the River Gate. Emmon holds Riverrun with a garrison of two hundred men. A singer who was present at the siege, Tom of Sevenstreams, decides to remain in Riverrun to sing for the Lord Emmon and Lady Genna.[8]
