During the First Dornish War, Lord Mertyns and his entire household were poisoned by means of a cask of Dornish wine by Dornish assassins.[4]

Lord Jon Mertyns traveled to King's Landing for the wedding of Queen Alyssa Velaryon to Lord Rogar Baratheon, where he spoke to the young King Jaehaerys I Targaryen and approved of his good-humored nature.[5]

Ser Michael Mertyns, better known as the White Owl, was a member of the Kingsguard.[6]
