House Trant is a noble family from the Stormlands. They are one of the principal houses sworn to House Baratheon.[1]

According to a semi-canon source the seat of House Trant is Gallowsgrey. Their words are "So End Our Foes".[2] They blazon their shields with azure, a hanged man, sable.[3]

The Hedge Knight

When Steely Pate gives Dunk his newly painted shield, they discuss the auspicious merit of various heraldic sigils. Pate mentions having seen shields adorned with, among other things, hanged men and reminds Dunk that they served their wielders well enough.

The Mystery Knight

Early on this third Dunk and Egg tale we learn that Dunk, having had his shield destroyed in battle in The Sworn Sword, recently bought a new shield during his stay at Stoney Sept.

The shield has not been painted since his last owner and therefore still features as its sigil a man hanging from a gallows tree - most likely the personal coat of arms for some member of House Trant. That eventually inspires Dunk into adopting the temporary alias of "The Gallows Knight" to go incognito for a while.
