House Vance of Wayfarer's Rest is one of the two great branches of House Vance in the riverlands, the other being House Vance of Atranta.

Neither their arms or their motto appear in the books. According to semi-canon sources they blazon their arms as quartered, a black dragon on white, two golden eyes in a golden ring on black.[4] They supported the blacks during the Dance of the Dragons,[5] but it is not known whether the black dragon on their sigil is supposed to indicate this choice, as the arms were created before George R. R. Martin decided they supported the blacks.[6]

House Vance rules over wider domains and can field a much larger army than their overlord of House Tully.[7] House Smallwood is sworn to Wayfarer's Rest.[8]

History

Armistead Vance was the mightiest of the Andal conquerors who defeated King Tristifer IV Mudd.[9]

In the century after the downfall of House Justman, the Vances were among the petty kings which disputed the riverlands. Lord Vance of Wayfarer's Rest was slain in the war between the Teagues and the Storm King Arlan III Durrandon. Lord Robert Vance was a would-be river king during the rule of the Storm Kings; it is unknown which branch he was from.[10]

The Vances joined the rebellion of river lords against Harren the Black during Aegon's Conquest.[11] The Vances supported Prince Aegon Targaryen against King Maegor I Targaryen, but Lord Ronnel Vance was slain in the Battle Beneath the Gods Eye.[12] Lord Vance of Wayfarer's Rest attended the Golden Wedding and observed King Jaehaerys I Targaryen.[13]

Queen Rhaena Targaryen and her dragon, Dreamfyre, briefly stayed with the Vances of Wayfarer's Rest.[14] Vances were among the handmaidens of Queen Alysanne Targaryen at Dragonstone when she was pregnant with Aemon Targaryen.[15]

House Vance of Wayfarer's Rest supported the blacks of Rhaenyra Targaryen during the Dance of the Dragons, while House Vance of Atranta declared for the greens of Aegon II Targaryen.[5] Lord Tristan Vance was slain by Ser Adrian Tarbeck during the Battle of the Red Fork.[16] Black Trombo was a Myrish sellsword captain in the service of Lord Vance.[17] Young Lord Hugo Vance supported Ser Addam Velaryon in the Second Battle of Tumbleton,[18] and he then joined the host of Lord Elmo Tully.[19]

Recent Events

A Game of Thrones

When the Lannisters start massing men at the Golden Tooth, Ser Edmure Tully commands Lord Clement Piper and Lord Vance of Wayfarer's Rest to guard the pass.[20] Ser Karyl Vance is with his father at the pass below the Golden Tooth when Ser Gregor Clegane and the Mountain's men started ravaging holdfasts in the riverlands. Karyl is sent with Ser Marq Piper and Ser Raymun Darry to report to the Iron Throne.[21]

Lord Vance is slain when the Lannisters attack from the Golden Tooth.[22] Karyl, the new Lord of Wayfarer's Rest, and Marq raid the Lannister army in the riverlands.[23] Karyl is among the river lords at Riverrun when Robb Stark is crowned King in the North.[24]

A Clash of Kings

Robb allows the rivermen to return to their homes, so Karyl leaves Riverrun to defend Wayfarer's Rest.[25]

At the Battle of the Fords, Lord Karyl is commanded with the defense of the fords north of Riverrun.[26]

A Storm of Swords

Lord Vance is among the seven nobles who launch the funeral boat of Lord Hoster Tully.[27] Ser Lymond Vikary is held captive at Wayfarer's Rest.[1]

An unnamed Vance is killed at the Red Wedding by Black Walder Frey.[28] King Tommen I Baratheon later signs the pardon of Lord Vance.[29] It is unknown if it is for Karyl or Lord Norbert of Atranta, but afterwards both have been welcomed to the King's Peace.[30]

A Feast for Crows

Both branches of House Vance are present at the siege of Riverrun,[30] and their lords take part in the war councils.[31] After finishing the siege, Lord Karyl recommends to Ser Jaime Lannister he go to the siege of Raventree, since Lord Tytos Blackwood will never surrender to Lord Jonos Bracken.[32]
