Prince Jacaerys Velaryon, also known as Jace, was the firstborn son of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and her first husband, Ser Laenor Velaryon. When Rhaenyra was crowned queen, she named Jacaerys as Prince of Dragonstone and heir to the Iron Throne. Jacaerys was a dragonrider whose dragon was Vermax.[3]

Appearance and Character

Jace was a strapping lad. Like his brothers Lucerys and Joffrey, he had brown hair and eyes, and a pug nose. This made many at court suspect that Ser Harwin Strong was their true father.[1][4]

History

Jacaerys was fifteen-years-old at the start of the civil war which became known as the Dance of the Dragons. He rode his dragon, Vermax, to the Eyrie, Sisterton, White Harbor, and Winterfell to raise support for his mother Rhaenyra Targaryen's claim. After successfully gaining the Vale of Arryn for the blacks,[3] he also gained the north through the Pact of Ice and Fire, promising young Cregan Stark a Targaryen princess as a bride.[5]

According to semi-canon sources, Cregan Stark had a bastard half-sister, and Mushroom's ribald and little-trusted account of the war claimed that Jacaerys fell in love with the girl and married her in secret.[6] This semi-canon information seems to match with Mushroom's claims that were presented in the print version of The World of Ice and Fire, which reports that Mushroom claimed that Vermax laid an egg while at Winterfell, and Jacaerys left the dragon-egg hidden there as a token for some reason.[7]

After his brother Lucerys was killed at Storm's End, Rhaenyra was consumed by grief. Soon afterwards Rhaena was killed at Rook's Rest, leaving her grieving husband Corlys Velaryon estranged from Rhaenyra as well. At this time it was Jacaerys who rose up to take lead of the blacks and reconsolidate their position. He reconciled Corlys with Rhaenyra by naming him Hand of the Queen, and directed their other armies marshalling across Westeros. Moreover, it was Jacaerys who came up with the idea of recruiting unacknowledged Targaryen bastards from Dragonstone - the "Dragonseeds" - to attempt to claim the six riderless dragons nesting on the island, to make up for the two dragons they had lost.[3]

Jacaerys took part in the Battle of the Gullet, where Vermax flew too low and went crashing into the sea. Jace leapt free and briefly clung to smoking wreckage, but sank into the sea after being struck by Myrish crossbow quarrels.[3]

Quotes by Jacaerys

Our uncle calls us Strongs, and claims we are bastards, but when the lords see us on dragonback they will know that for a lie. Only Targaryens ride dragons.[3]

- Jacaerys, to the black council

Quotes about Jacaerys

Broken after the loss of one son, Rhaenyra Targaryen seemed to find new strength after the loss of a second. Jace's death hardened her, burning away her fears, leaving only her anger and hatred.[3]
