A Clash of Kings
Ser Jon is amongst the lords who declare for Renly and is present beneath the walls of Bitterbridge when Lady Catelyn Tully arrives. When the parley between the brothers Renly and Stannis Baratheon breaks down and battle seems imminent, Ser Jon offers to lead the van into battle.[2]
Apparently Ser Jon went over to Stannis's forces after Renly's death because he is in Stannis company at the siege of Storm's End. The castle's castellan, Ser Cortnay Penrose proposes to settle the siege with single combat. Ser Jon advises Stannis to take him up to his offer. He himself is prepared to take the challenge although he admits that he is not as good as Lord Bryce Caron or Ser Guyard Morrigen. [3]
