The kindly man is a priest of the Many-Faced God in the House of Black and White in Braavos and a Faceless Man. He does not give his name. He is the only one in the House of Black and White who speaks the Common Tongue of Westeros, and appears to be in charge of the temple.

Appearance

When he first shows his face to Arya it is a yellow skull with scraps of skin hanging from it and a white worm coming out of an eye hole. After Arya kisses him and bites the worm, his face changes to that of the kindliest old man she ever saw.[1] He wears a robe with cowl of black on the right side and white on the left side.[citation needed]

A Feast for Crows

Kindly Man by Paul Phillips©

He takes charge of Arya Stark's training as an acolyte of the Many-Faced God. He first assigns her to learn the tongue of Braavos from the Waif and to teach the Waif the Common Tongue of Westeros. He confirms to Arya that the Waif is 36 years old. When she can speak some Braavosi, he sends her out into the streets of Braavos as Cat of the Canals. He arranges for her to stay with Brusco, a fish merchant, and to sell cockles, clams and mussels which she transports in a wheelbarrow.[2]

A Dance with Dragons

He gives Arya Stark her first assignment. She is instructed to kill the target and no one else, not even the mark's bodyguards. She completes this task by poisoning a coin and mixing it in the targets other coins (the man always bite his coins to ensure they were real gold).[2]

Quotes by the kindly man

Death is not the worst thing. It is His gift to us, an end to want and pain.[2]

The gift of the Many-Faced God takes myriad forms, but here it is always gentle.[2]

We kill men, but we do not presume to judge them.[3]

Death holds no sweetness in this house. We are not warriors, nor soldiers, nor swaggering bravos puffed up with pride. We do not kill to serve some lord, to fatten our purses, to stroke our vanity. We never give the gift to please ourselves. Nor do we choose the ones we kill. We are but servants of the God of Many Faces.[4]

You lie. Worse, you lie poorly.[2]

—the kindly man, to Arya Stark

And are you a god, to decide who should live and who should die? We give the gift to those marked by Him of Many Faces, after prayers and sacrifice.[3]

—the kindly man, to Arya Stark
