Rattleshirt, also known as the Lord of Bones, is a wildling leader of renown. He is called Rattleshirt due to his armor, which is made up of loosely-tied bones that clatter as he moves. He wears a broken giant's skull as his helm.[1]

History

Before Mance Rayder made peace between them, Rattleshirt warred with Harma Dogshead.[2]

A Clash of Kings

When the Night's Watch plans for the coming battle with the gathered wildlings, they are wary of a few of the leaders, Rattleshirt among them. Rattleshirt leads the party that catches up with Qhorin Halfhand and Jon Snow. He commands Jon to kill Qhorin.[3]

A Storm of Swords

Rattleshirt brings Jon Snow to Mance Rayder. He is dismissed by Mance, but not before he casts suspicion on Jon's true motives. During the wildling assault on the Wall, Rattleshirt was spotted near Long Barrow.[4] Rattleshirt was captured by the Night's Watch and was trotted out at the meeting between Jon Snow and Lord Janos Slynt as a witness of the death of Qhorin Halfhand at the hands of Jon.[5]

A Dance with Dragons

When Mance Rayder is executed by Stannis and the Watch, the man who they killed was actually Rattleshirt who was glamoured by Melisandre to appear as Mance. Meanwhile the real Mance via an enchanted ruby worn round his throat appears as Rattleshirt.

Appearance

He is a small man, with a knobby chin, thin mustache and pinched cheeks. His eyebrows join over the bridge of his nose, he has a widow's peak and dark hair.[6]
