A Game of Thrones

Maester Luwin recieves a box containing a secret message meant for Catelyn Stark.[2] After Catelyn reads the letter, the Starks decide that they must continue on as if nothing happened, Lord Eddard will continue south with the king. Then Bran is attacked and Catelyn races off to inform her husband of the new events. After Robb's departure south after Lord Eddard had been taken prisoner, Maester Luwin is named castellan of Winterfell. He relinquishes the title upon Ser Rodrik Cassel's return from the south.

A Clash of Kings

With Robb Starks departure, the day-to-day rule of the North fell to Ser Rodrik Cassel and Maester Luwin, acting with Bran's voice. With Ser Rodrik's departure to deal with Ramsay Snow and the fight over the Hornwood inheritance, the governance fell completely on his shoulders.

Appearance

He is a small grey man with grey eyes and hair. He has a robe of grey wool with voluminous sleeves. In the sleeves are sewn pockets, from which Maester Luwin is always drawing things.[3] His maester's collar is a simple choker.[4] He is an untidy man. He is one of the few maesters who bothered to study for the Valyrian steel link.[5]
